It's just textures.

Impressive eye candy, seems like parallax mapping.

All it is is different cloud layers for each zone rotating at different speeds and directions. No graphical techniques are necessary for this that do not already exist in SE (and Celestia). If you wanted you could make a similar map for Saturn or Neptune and it would work in 0.96 (though you might have to limit the number of layers).

Saturn model in dynamics - as in case with Jupiter - 10 layers (cloud belts) with different (real) speed and direction

Cool smile

One thing I would like to ask is if you can make the blue part of the texture match the color of the other parts? Parts of Saturn are only blue on a seasonal basis, so textures should not have any blue on them.

Very nice, great work!

I occasionally stream at http://www.twitch.tv/magistermystax. Sometimes SE, sometimes other games.

I like how just having some layers with transparency can have such a nice looking effect.

Very nice! Wow...

Will you make Uranus model? It has very contrasting colors, such an effect would completely change it!

Sorry, did I miss something?

Is Brainstorm SE under a different screen-name?
Only 1 post ever? And it's epic!?

What's going on?! This is wrinkling my brain!!!

And, on the subject of these awesome cloud animations:

Are they at slightly differing altitudes? Could they be?

If so, (long shot) would the ring-shadow-casting thing work with them? It'd be great to get into very low orbit and have the sense of depth enhanced by seeing the shadows of one cloud belt overhanging another.

No

He has more posts on the Russian forum

Are they at slightly differing altitudes?

Of course, that's the only way it can work.

Of course, they're just normal cloud layers

EDIT: To answer your question directly: currently, no they don't.

It would be cool to see cloud shadows in the future, though.

Indeed it would! I really miss it while watching the Earth from close range. sad

I had never thought about it until now. It'd add a nice, "cheap" bit of dynamism to the landscapes of SE.

Something like that doesn't have to be too computationally expensive, right?

It doesn't have to be ray-traced, or dynamically shadow-mapped, it can be approximated with just a projection of the cloud texture onto the surface texture as a subtractive layer, or something. That's probably how Celestia did it, right?

Knowing Space Engineer, it's definitely already on the list.

I'm envisioning a similar method to how the ring shadows work.

Huh, I never noticed that SE didn't have cloud shadows. Weird, even Celestia has them.

It threw me off because he asked about ring shadows, not cloud shadows, but then changed direction and described cloud shadows and not ring shadows. So I just answered the question that he asked most clearly.
