| Quote DJKiran ( ) You are right, closer images have a larger difference in each eye, so their red/cyan positions should be further apart, whereas further objects have a negligible difference, so red/cyan should be closer together. It doesn't matter if you can focus on it, it's the case of how our brain puts the two images together, similar to real life. This is wrong, as I described in previous post. When you look at infinity, your eye axes are parallel. When you focus on screen, your eye axes are intersects at screen, so left/right images must fit each other.

| But that's you eye doing the work, not the images on the screen.
The way I understand it is:
If you aren't moving, each of your eyes are seeing a static 2D image Your brain does some magic to make them look 3D When you focus on something close, you go cross-eyed in order to make the object you are focusing on, the same position in each eye - which is the eye doing the work, not the image on the screen. Of course, with every other object not in the plane of focus, they get blurry and double-visioned. The structure of your retina/pupil also changes to alter the focal lengths, apertures, etc, to make the object come into focus. When you focus on infinity, your eyes are parallel.
Am I thinking right?

| DJKiran you are close, but I'd recommend checking out "Doc-Ok's" blog. He is a university level VR researcher that really knows his stuff. It turns out "good" 3D is much more complicated than just a left and right image and convergence like you mention (I previously thought that's all it was.) Much of what you are asking is actually covered in these videos/blog posts:
http://doc-ok.org/?p=77 (Good 3D stereo vs. bad)
http://doc-ok.org/?p=756#more-756 (How the 3D and the Oculus Rift works, the video mid-article is very interesting)
http://doc-ok.org/?p=764 (Part 2 followup on Oculus Rift eye-tracking and 3D)
If you send him a message he's pretty good at responding, and can answer your specific questions about anaglyph 3D/focal lengths/etc.. but I think the videos above may do the trick. (Even the ones about the rift)
Edit: Also, SpaceEngineer.. that last photo of the astronaut and spaceship in rift mode looks fantastic! (viewing screenshot on my rift now) The anticipation is killing me..

| Thanks for the explanation SpaceEngineer, it made perfect sense ! Especially the part about interpupillary distance, I htink I do now truly understand how 3D works

| because we have 2 eyes + parallax + our brain seems to have an incredible way to understand depth. in theory if there aren't 2 images the brain shouldn't be able to understand depth but somehow it does in real world situations
anyway parallax is what you see when things further away move slower than things nearby creating a sence of depth . this only happens if your camera in concern moves simple rotations on a pivot dosent produce any parallax hence the 3d effect is minimal
in essence things nearby in a anaglyph 3d image would have the 2 colors close together and things further away would be spread apart . I guess :-p
but cant wait to see space engine on the rift .....!!! wooo so far from what I have seen of space in the rift my favourite one is elite dangerous. the game looks amazing in the rift

| Eye also accomodates (focuses) on the object based on its distance. Our brain uses this information too.

| Does anyone have idea how to mark the barycenter when orbits displaying is on? Three perpendicular lines is not a good imo. Maybe 2D cross or big dot?

| I prefer the small cross.
A dot could be too close to a star.

| Wow, i have tried wiggle stereography in space engine and it looked amazing, even with little perception of deep, i'm gonna try to make some red/blue 3d glasses...
Wish i had a 3d dispositive.
Amazing looking update.
