| I recently saw today Ender's Game. Blew my mind. It really inspired me. One of the best sci-fi movies i have ever seen.

| I love Gravity so much. I just re watched it today in Bluray. Love that re-entry. One of my favorite movies of all time.

| Interstellar, no doubt. I know it, you know it. It's three hours of solid, pure science ficiotn brilliance with the best animations and sound design I have ever seen. The plot, too, is unbelievable! Anyone who jasn't seen it doesn't know real space-goodness.
But hey, that's only my criticism. 
All you need in life are space games and typhlosions.

| Interstellar would be one of my all-time favorite films (of any genre) if the soundtrack was just slightly less loud and it didn't have the few too many eyes-roll-back-in-the-head-ridiculous lines delivered. Still, it's sooo goood.
I think my favorite sci-fi's are (not in any particular order), 2001, 2010, Close Encounters of 3rd Kind, The Matrix, Serenity, Men in Black, District 9, Primer, Interstellar, and Contact.
Also, if we count animated: Wall-E, Paprika, and Akira.

| Has anyone seen The Martian yet?
I saw it yesterday and I was pleasantly surprised. It's a good movie without antagonists we've seen a hundred times before. Most of the factual errors about Mars are easily ignored (except, perhaps, the low pressure of the Martian atmosphere).
The Ares programme looks expensive, but NASA will apparently save money by relying on GoPro cameras from the 2010's.  And they'll also use present day video conferencing equipment. Our stuff. Indirectly we (at work) have a small part in the movie. A long time colleague of mine went to the set in Budapest last year to set up the videoconferencing systems used in the movie. It's good to know it will last into the 2030's (or whenever it's set), but I guess it also means that we have to support the software all that time...

Yep! LOVED IT!
What a great 3 years it's been for attempted realism in big-budget space movies!
Gravity had gorgeous visuals, mind-blowing cinematography and direction, impeccable micrgravity (aside from that one scene), snappy enough dialogue, a simple plot, and atrocious orbital mechanics. I love it.
Interstellar had gorgeous visuals, mostly-accurately rendered gravitational lensing, relativity as a driver of plot, great orbital mechanics, shonky dialogue, oppressive atmosphere, and a plot so oddly twisted it may have been 5-dimensional. I love it.
The Martian... holy cow. Everything the other two got right, it got right - except the sound design (in space, everyone can hear you scream) - snappy dialogue, great plot, stunning visuals, and an interesting and uplifting script. I LOVE it. I think it's my favourite of the three.

Well, they do make a song and a dance about pressure issues at times in dialogue, but then they cut back to Mars and show supposedly-pressurised habitat sheeting flapping in the wind... so... yeah.

I also noticed Vincent Kapoor arriving at JPL in a 2009 Volvo XC90. That was the thing that suddenly snapped my attention to how stagnant technology apparently had become. The book was written before the commercial space industry (aka SpaceX) really became a credible thing, so the stagnation extends to the rockets - we see ULA Atlas V's and a Delta IV Heavy. It's kind of consistent, so I took it as a stylistic choice.

I didn't care for it at all. I couldn't root for the main character, I felt his position in the film was never adequately justified, the action was like watching someone play a computer game, and I saw the twist coming a parsec away. (I hadn't read the book). But to each their own - my companion at the cinema loved it.
So... my favourite Sci-Fi movies...
Well, first off, I can't rank Star Trek along with other movies - it's part of my personality. There are Star Trek movies, and then there are Movies, they're two unrankably separate categories.
So, Star Treks: The Wrath Of Khan; First Contact; The Undiscovered Country; The Voyage Home, in that order.
Now, on to movies!
Children Of Men is astounding.
The Matrix. I haven't watched that in far too long.
District 9, of course.
The Back to the Future trilogy.
And lots of things I'm forgetting that I'll be back to edit in here.

| Most Star Trek movies, The Matrix, Armageddon, Starship Troopers, Terminator, The Martian. Interstellar is my most favored by far though. Never saw the Total Recall from 2012. Any good?
