| I'll use this thread for a new topic, since it's about music.
As you know, the Voyager spacecrafts carry a golden record, which among other things contains a wide selection of music. The record is a message to any alien civilisations out there. I suppose music was selected because it shows some of the nature and artistic skills of humankind. But can we expect all that music to make sense to any aliens?
So what is music, why do we like it? Music generally contains three elements: rhythm, melody and harmony.
Rhythm mimics the human heartbeat. Rhythm stops having much appeal if it falls outside roughly 40 to 240 beats per minute, closely matching the human heart rate. Alien hearts may have totally different rates, or they might have a totally different circulation system, in which case our musical rhythm and the music will make no sense. Take rhythm away from music and the music will stop making sense to us as well.
Melody mimics the human speech. But aliens may have very different ways of communication by audio, and our melodies and speech may have as little appeal to them as the sounds of bats or crickets appeal us.
Harmony follows mathematical relationships, and should be universally understandable. But does it have any value beyond the banal? Would make any more impression on aliens than a collection of, say, factorised numbers would impress us?
While the origin of music perhaps goes back to storytelling and techniques for memorising, music stands on its own feet. But what makes music work for us is very human.
I think it's extremely unlikely that the random alien out there would appreciate the music as we do. However, if an alien species does, which cannot be ruled out, then that is the alien species that we'd like to know.

| This is also something I was always thinking, and this is a question of channel. The golden recorf contains a vinyl, which is just the sound signal represented by a carved line on adisc. We, humans, we percieve music through sound, as it will make no sens to "listen" a music lookibg to its graph. The range of frequency we can hear is between 20 and 20000 Hz, and in music, we use from 10 to 10000 Hz (too much trebleis unpleasent, but we use sometime infrasound bassto make people "feel" the vibrations).
if the aliens can appreciate a certain form of signal, they can strecth/adapt our music for their perception. But they will not percieve all from music, as there are a lot of cultural aspects of it (instruments used, language of lyrics, presence of lyrics, used scale...). The only aspects they will notice will be some mathematical properties of music, like the frequencies ratios, octaves, thestructure of the beats, which is geometrical.

| I found the MOST disturbing band ever. Don't listen to this if you want to sleep. It is called Stalaggh and Gulaggh. There isn't any cursing or anything, but if you google them, you will understand how messed up they are.

On another note, the latest Ultimae release, Passages, is a very nice listen as well.

| Quote HarbingerDawn ( ) Pink Floyd
Ok, the situation is this: - You get angry with your fellows and you leave them. - You have to fight the super-strong capitain of a spaceship. - You miserably loose the fight. - You're almost dead and you're talking with the guy. - The fellows that you left, forgive you and come back to help you in the fight.
Do you think this music fits good?
