| Quote (neutronium76) No one guarantees survival of a spacefaring civilization But that doesn't make the statement not true. It doesn't say that all spacefaring civilizations avoid extinction, just that all civilizations that avoid extinction are spacefaring.

| Quote (HarbingerDawn) I can't wait! It will be interesting to see what comes out of it, but I don't think the trailer looks too promising. I fear that it will be noisy and have a too high "bang" factor. And if it's anything like how documentaries are made these days, it might be repetitive as well. The original Cosmos was pleasantly paced with focus on history and philosophy rather than on explosions and other things that might appeal to teenage boys. But I'll gladly give it a chance.

| Quote (midtskogen) I don't think the trailer looks too promising. I feel the opposite. I was originally very uneasy about the prospects for this show, and my sole source of comfort was that it was being made by the same people who made the original (minus Sagan and plus a couple of new people). But the trailer actually gave me a lot more hope, and I think it looks like it might do things the right way. It certainly doesn't look like most other documentaries made these days (which was my biggest fear for the new show).
Quote (midtskogen) The original Cosmos was pleasantly paced with focus on history and philosophy rather than on explosions and other things The trailer suggests (at least to me) that this one will be focused thusly as well (though the pacing will probably be different, if only to fit the same amount of content in a 30% shorter time slot). The trailer showed obvious examples of historical scenes, etc. The style of traveling around the world for filming, as well as the concept of the spaceship of the imagination, have been retained.
Quote (midtskogen) I fear that it will be noisy and have a too high "bang" factor. It will probably have more of this than the original Cosmos did, but I think it will still prove to be a pleasant improvement from the documentaries of today. Also, keep in mind that this was a first-look trailer, and the Fox people probably wanted to make it look as exciting as possible.

| I don't know what to think about the new Cosmos. At times I think it will be good, others I think they might mess it up. It can't come soon enough though.

| Quote DoctorOfSpace ( ) I don't know what to think about the new Cosmos. At times I think it will be good, others I think they might mess it up. I'm cautiously optimistic. I think there might be some things that they'll mess up (depicting the Big Bang as an explosion - again), and I doubt it can possibly be as good as the original (Tyson is no Carl Sagan, and it will probably have commercial breaks), but I think it will probably be good enough, certainly better than any of the other crap science documentaries out there these days.
Quote DoctorOfSpace ( ) It can't come soon enough though. I'm with you on that.

| Tried recreating the 'Pale Blue Dot' picture in SE. Added some noise afterwards in Photoshop too.

| For english class we had to choose an epic hero (to tie into our Odyssey unit) and write a poem about them (due next tuesday). I chose Carl Sagan (if you didn't figure that out by now). Upon suggesting this idea to my teacher, I learned that she lived down the street from him (she is much younger than him, and had never actually met him). Apparently, though, he was like a legend in their school.
