Since I installed new galaxies it's messed with the procedural stars and galaxies, so mine and yours are probably different. So I can't really give you the planet locations.

Yup, It's there. There are no canyons in deserts on the default shaders

Just create a shaders folder in the system folder and extract the files there

Is the current shaders version compatible with 0.974 p6 or do they need to be updated?

Yes, It is compatible. But since the the 0.9.7.4 b6 files are newer than this mod, the program ignore the mod files.
To make it work, open each shader file, add a "space" at the end of any code line and save the file. Since the shader file is now "newer" than the original shader.pak file, SE now recognizes it.
