I've noticed people talking bout movies and books and games about space and science fiction but what about the documentaries. I've seen a bunch both one shots and series and i wanted to see what your opinions were. smile

Which ones were the best documentaries you've seen? Which explained things best for you? Which looked the best CG wise?

A couple of the more interesting series i've seen was Space with Sam Neill and The Universe which ran on The History Channel smile And just a while ago i saw this piece which was pretty interesting in terms of following a good rout through the universe, had a interesting sound environment and graphic design.

I suggest taking a look.

Best science documentary series ever made: without a doubt, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage (1980). Nothing made before or since has had the power to affect and influence lives and minds like that show did. Carl Sagan was a truly rare master. The visuals are certainly unimpressive by today's standards, but other than that nothing else ever made can really compare to it.

A sequel series is currently being written by Seth MacFarlane, and original Cosmos writers Ann Druyan and Steven Soter. It and will be hosted by Neil deGrasse Tyson. It may be finished in 18 months.

Another good ongoing science documentary series is Nova. The show has no specific focus on any topic, and explores anything science-related. It has aired nearly 700 episodes so far smile

There have also been a number of interesting IMAX documentary films made. They tend to be short in duration, but since IMAX films have such superb audio and visual quality it makes up for it.

For the most part however I am usually unimpressed by most science documentaries. They really just don't seem to get it right most of the time. The only one I've ever seen that's really gotten everything into it that should be there is Sagan's Cosmos.

Best space documentary i have ever seen must be Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking: The Story of Everything.
It had superb narration and CG. It is a 2-hour documentary about the life of our universe. It tells how the universe began, where it is now, what it holds in the future and how it will probably end.
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4GcmbFb8afQ
Seriously, watch it.

Another very good documentary was one Finnish documentary about the beginning of life and the formation of our solar system.
It had this awesome CG scene where Earth and Thea collided and the camera was stationed on the surface of Earth in a way that Thea covered the whole sky while sun shined at the horizon. Giant volcanoes could be seen spewing smoke upside-down in the sky. It was magnificent devil .

Nova Science Now is one of my favorites.

Here is a site I found a while ago that links to tons of documentaries

Some links are down but most still work.

neutronium76, there is a thread dedicated solely to documentaries right here, a simple search for "documentaries" would have brought you directly to this thread. Try the search function next time as it's easier than searching the forums manually.

When We Left Earth: The NASA Missions

Yeah those are pretty good. They skip a lot later on though, the don't even mention Apollo-Soyuz, and most of the Space Shuttle missions are overlooked for obvious reasons, though there are some that I think should have been in there. They also made it sound like the shuttle program was a success when in fact it was a pretty huge failure (a fact which NASA did a good job of disguising).

Yep, they don't go into details neither, it's a big overview of some great Nasa moments of space adventure, nothing more. The glorious/heroic music all the time kinda annoyed me too.. But it certainly have some great images.

It's an American show extolling American awesomeness, the music is to be expected wink And yeah the images are amazing, they did a really good job of cleaning up all the old footage and converting it to HD, it looks amazing. Also, the fact that so much of the commentary is from people who were really there is great too.

I've just watched this NG documentary:

What do you guys think? Would we be able to build such a spacecraft within such a short period of time?
IMHO no.
Also the earth would probably suffer much damage due to the effects of the neutron star far before the 0 year and any efforts to build such ship would be futile anyway. But that's just me and my pesimism sad ...

Seemingly every documentary made these days by the big "science" networks is terrible dry I got 11 minutes into this one and gave up.

A couple years ago, discovery was pretty good, now its back to back episodes of scripted reality shows that have nothing to do with science. I made it 3 minutes in.
