| I don't see why everyone seem to fear a robot dominated world, while is quite more possible that a world will be dominated by, well, a human elite quite similar to the one we already have, but with a way bigger digital divide. Big parts of production, both physical and intellectual, can and will be mechanized in the next year, and so will weapons. I find quite unlikely that an AI will be on the top of all this, hating humans for some reason. I see some 1984 scenario way more likely, with the difference that no opposition will literally be possible. So far, dictators and governments just kept the people because they needed "us" to work. If they can replace workers (and teachers, and artists, and everything) by robots, why not kill everyone but the ruling class?
It's basically the same thing i already said before, still after all you said, it looks still to me as the most likely outcome of the technological revolution in production... Why shouldn't it happen? we have schools because factories needed skilled workers. We have hospitals because these workers need to live long enough to work. We have transports to move goods and people to keep the industry profitable. All of these things started to appear (and to be accessible to the common populace) with the industrial revolution, exactly when it was needed to have a well being population. But if you don't need this population at all, why to keep it?
Meh, they (we) would be just mouth to feed and possible opposition to the ruling class. A net cost at best, a risk at worst. Who needs 7 billions people when 10,000 are more than enough?

| I do not think that sometime the robots dominate the world. I think that a human elite will dominate the world who use the robots to dominate the world.
Don't forget to look here.

Seems unlikely. To gain more control would require better robots, better robots would need to be smarter, inevitably your creation outsmarts you.

| Quote DoctorOfSpace ( ) inevitably your creation outsmarts you. Only when we are so stupid not an off switch to install It would of course be remotely controlled, for example, via cell phone. A code word, like that which River Tam paralyzes would, of course, also go.

| Seems like such methods could be outsmarted by a clever enough AI.

| Marvin Minsky, Pioneer in Artificial Intelligence, Dies at 88
Quote Marvin Minsky, who combined a scientist’s thirst for knowledge with a philosopher’s quest for truth as a pioneering explorer of artificial intelligence, work that helped inspire the creation of the personal computer and the Internet, died on Sunday night in Boston. He was 88.
His family said the cause was a cerebral hemorrhage.
Well before the advent of the microprocessor and the supercomputer, Professor Minsky, a revered computer science educator at M.I.T., laid the foundation for the field of artificial intelligence by demonstrating the possibilities of imparting common-sense reasoning to computers. http://www.nytimes.com/2016....88.html
"The only people I ever met whose intellects surpassed my own were Carl Sagan and Marvin Minsky." - Isaac Asimov
Terrible news, especially since he bled into his brain, will make cryo-preservation exceptionally difficult if not impossible.

| Guys, can you imagine if someone discovered a way to reach interstellar distances in a reasonable time and with a reasonable cost?
That would mean that we could send trash on the Sun, we could take resources from other planets rather than ours, the population could be reduced and so our food requirements (so there would be less terrain exploitation*, and maybe more people will stop eating animals once for all).
So why do no-one seems to care? Isn't that a better way to reduce population than the ones that Multinationals are using? (or, at least, that's what some people claims)
I'm so afraid this isn't possible, because if it was there would probably be aliens on this planet, and there are not. (see Fermi's paradox) But think about it this way: What if it WAS possible? That would mean that our civility would reach the next stage, and self-destruction could be avoided, so why isn't science really trying to discover IF that's possible?
* I'm not sure about that word, the meaning isn't probably what I mean...

| Quote Salvo ( ) I'm so afraid this isn't possible, because if it was there would probably be aliens on this planet, and there are not. I could imagine; that aliens who visits us, at least to the Type II civilization belong. And that they would be smart enough not to walk around, shaking hands and shouting 'Hey, look here, I'm an alien'. At least not if they do not come anyway with the intention to destroy us. This they would have to do, if they identify themselves. Because otherwise we would try to destroy them.
How do we know that they are not here?
Quote Salvo ( ) and maybe more people will stop eating animals once for all If all men were vegetarians, we would need much less resources. Because we would not need fodder for 1.37 billion cattle. People are not carnivores, because it would be an ecological necessity, but because they like to live on the blood and flesh of other creatures.
Don't forget to look here.

Yeah, we are a stupid civilization that destroyed two huge cities with an incredibly-powerful type of bomb, for... no serious reason at all, but if they have the technology to reach this planet, why can't they defend them-self? Maybe it's my fault, maybe it's our mentality that is wrong. After all, if they survived so long they probably have a better mentality than ours.
Still it's hard for me to believe that aliens are really so near to us.

| Quote Salvo ( ) Still it's hard for me to believe that aliens are really so near to us. With believe or not believe it has nothing to do. I just think that we can not know it. Technically more advanced civilizations must also not necessarily be wise. But at least they have to be wise enough not to destroy themselves if they want to be here. And I assume that they would not make themselves known. On the one hand, to avoid a culture shock for us, and secondly because they can explore us much better if we have no idea that we are being watched. And perhaps one of the experiments, which they do with us, is the spread of UFO stories. To explore our reactions, and to prepare us.

It would be better if we changed our habits and stopped creating so much waste. The alternative is to develop nanofabrication units that could then reuse all of the materials.
Quote Salvo ( ) So why do no-one seems to care?
Plenty of people care. There is a different between caring and capability and in many regards we lack the capability to do things in a cheap and easy manner.
Quote Salvo ( ) Isn't that a better way to reduce population than the ones that Multinationals are using? (or, at least, that's what some people claims)
Population is not an issue. Already we produce more than the entire Earth needs and then some, the issue is distribution. Many studies suggest population will plateau around mid century and even begin to drop later.
Quote Salvo ( ) so why isn't science really trying to discover IF that's possible?
It is.
Quote Salvo ( ) but my opinion is that if they were here they wouldn't hide.
Just because you feel that way about something does not mean that is how it is. There have been numerous UFO and alien sightings over the years and it is completely possible that we just aren't advanced enough to be worth anyone's time.

Quote DoctorOfSpace ( ) Plenty of people care. There is a different between caring and capability and in many regards we lack the capability to do things in a cheap and easy manner. What I meant it's: except in communities like this forum, there is no-one saying things like "we could save our planet with space exploration", if someone talks about that, it's just to say: "yeah, that's cool, it would be like being in one of those sci-fi movies".
People has no idea of the potentials of space exploration for economy, they think it's just for having awesome photos of planets.
Quote DoctorOfSpace ( ) Just because you feel that way about something does not mean that is how it is. Yeah, I'm not assuming what I say it's 100% true. Let's say 90%.

Plenty of people are though. There are many companies and institutions being founded all the time now that are trying to accomplish such things.
There was a time where powered flight was a small group of people claiming it was possible, and once those people proved it could be done the world was changed. The same can be said about using space for resources, it just needs time to grow and be proven viable.
