Eternal 5D data storage could record the history of humankind
Quote
The storage allows unprecedented properties including 360 TB/disc data capacity, thermal stability up to 1,000°C and virtually unlimited lifetime at room temperature (13.8 billion years at 190°C ) opening a new era of eternal data archiving. As a very stable and safe form of portable memory, the technology could be highly useful for organisations with big archives, such as national archives, museums and libraries, to preserve their information and records.

Coined as the ‘Superman memory crystal’, as the glass memory has been compared to the “memory crystals” used in the Superman films, the data is recorded via self-assembled nanostructures created in fused quartz. The information encoding is realised in five dimensions: the size and orientation in addition to the three dimensional position of these nanostructures.

This is not 5d, to be exact.

Quote
Using nanostructured glass, scientists from the University’s Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) have developed the recording and retrieval processes of five dimensional (5D) digital data by femtosecond laser writing.

I do not really know what this "nanostructured" word really means, but I've heard that glass itself, being amorphous material, has a tendency to flow like a liquid over extended periods of time.

Wait what? 19°C maybe then?

At room temperature almost unlimited.
At 190 ° about 13.8 billion years.

This is an extremely common but incorrect belief.

Amorphous simply means it lacks a regular crystalline structure. Solid means the structure is rigidly bonded together. Solids can flow given sufficient pressure and time due to dislocations, and liquids can also appear solid on human timescales if they are sufficiently viscous.

I do not know the details behind the 5d nanostructured glass, so I really can't say anything about these claims of its lifespan. But I have no real reason to doubt it. The people who developed it are pretty smart. smile

If something needs 5 independent numbers to be expressed, it's 5D exactly to me. But it doesn't need to be as impressive as it sounds. Adding one dimension could mean that the storage capacity is only doubled. For instance, if there are only two sizes and two orientations, the two extra dimensions mean that you only get four times the capacity.

And on a more negative side of things

The Kochs Are Plotting A Multimillion-Dollar Assault On Electric Vehicles
Quote
A new group that's being cobbled together with fossil fuel backing hopes to spend about $10 million dollars per year to boost petroleum-based transportation fuels and attack government subsidies for electric vehicles, according to refining industry sources familiar with the plan. A Koch Industries board member and a veteran Washington energy lobbyist are working quietly to fund and launch the new advocacy outfit.

Koch Industries, the nation's second-largest privately held corporation, is an energy and industrial conglomerate with $115 billion in annual revenues that is controlled by the multibillionaire brothers -- and prolific conservative donors -- Charles and David Koch. James Mahoney, a confidante of the brothers and member of their company's board, has teamed up with lobbyist Charlie Drevna, who until last year helmed the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers, for preliminary talks with several energy giants about funding the new pro-petroleum fuels group.

So, I would have liked it if Atlas would have taken the guy his hockey stick away and broken. Best on the head of the guy, but that would not allow Asimov's Laws of Robotics.

DoctorOfSpace,

Shameless Musk propaganda again, I'm getting sick from this.

Is it really propaganda if he actually does what he says he will do?

So far Musk has stuck by his word and if anyone can get humanity to Mars in the next 2 decades it is most definitely him.

Yes, it is, definitely, still. It is not even a bad thing in some cases - propaganda is not defined by relation to the reality(despite all negative tones it aquired to contrast modern media), but by the methods it employs. The aforementioned example is still a propaganda, but at least it was largely based on the evidence. But the new generation of "venture capitalism" takes this to the whole new level.

I should definitely say, or rather, repeat that my concern comes not from the fact that he is developing something, not at all. I am very worried about his advertisement campaign - his posture and his statements. Everything about it is wrong - even the idea of "private company" strikes my mind with a contradiction - isn't NASA already using private companies to construct their spacecraft? Isn't ULA a private company? Aren't Energia and other "national" space companies private, or they aren't private enough, not ambitious enough, not spending enough money to shove their plans into our faces year after year?

http://lawstreetmedia.com/blogs....pansion
Now it's gotten to the point where strategies like "Mars One" don't look absolutely ridiculous any more and just a bit ahead of the curve. Musk is going to send an empty ship to test it's landing on Mars before said ship is even proven to be able to deliver people anywhere? Why? Just for the heck of it, it appears so.

So far Musk has stuck by his word and if anyone can get humanity to Mars in the next 2 decades it is most definitely him.

For some reason it did not occur to most of his fans that "two decades" has been there for one decade already, and so far his plan only worked to the first stage of his first goalpost - to create a rocket that can deliver a payload to the orbit. Barely so.

It was perceived (in 00-s), I believe, that future projects will be developing in atmosphere of tough competition, in which only the true leaders will emerge as victors. 15 years later, there's only one warrior in the field, and his plans look both outlandishly daring and terrifying. This video is a paradox in itself - the speaker tells us that "all technologies are there" and if we just pile them up on on top of another there will be a capacity not only to fly on Mars, but to live there. One would ask, why then we did not do that earlier?

Yes, it is, definitely, still.

It is definitely not propaganda. It's advertising.
States, governments and ideologues make propaganda; business people advertise.

Perhaps because it would cost a lot of money? There are people who rather give trillions of dollars for wars, as a few billion for the survival of mankind really necessary things.
