| The future of humanity is bleak indeed if there are people who believe this nonsense. Wasn't sure if this should go here or in the conspiracy theories thread, given how insane these people are...

tl;dr - A bunch of hicks in North Carolina believe that solar panels suck up all the sun's energy from an area, preventing plant growth, and believe that solar panels cause cancer.

Im one of those hicks but from New york and I believe that solar panels are inefficient on power and that you have to change them every 7 years. I would go to fusion reactors anyday

| Quote steeljaw354 ( ) But the government won't make the investment
Governments around the world are making the investment and have been passing legislation for years to make the switch. A quick Google search would show you that Solar alone has seen huge advances in the last year and is slowly spreading to be a dominant form of energy production.
Quote steeljaw354 ( ) I belive humans will wipe themselves out if war doesn't stop soon.
Besides minor conflicts and proxy wars we are currently living in the most peaceful period in human history.
This video sums it up
Quote steeljaw354 ( ) People are too occupied with money, and video games
Replace money and video games with things people considered important or entertaining 500 years ago, 200 years, or even a century ago and you could make the same unfounded claim.
Quote steeljaw354 ( ) Robots will take our jobs, what will do then?
Quote ZackG ( ) I believe
Quote to have confidence in the truth, the existence, or the reliability of something, although without proof that one is right in doing so
And that is why saying you believe or have faith in something is not a valid argument or something to be respected.
Quote steeljaw354 ( ) Fusion reactors are bad for the enviroment, and if they explode, the surrounding area is contaminated with radition.
Wat?

| ZackG, Solar panels are indeed much less efficient in a number of environments, and most of this efficiency problems come not from efficiency of the solar panels themselves but from the power irregularities that come from their usage. Same goes for wind power, to a greater degree even. Most obviously, it's about expensive and unsafe accumulators, but in larger nets there are other means to regulate that, mostly by coordinating power rates at other sources - well, these require a lot of money too.
Currently there's a level, I believe, about 20-30%, of generation, to which an average grid can accept such sources without additional investments in power regulation. IMO investments in alternative sources of energy are far too high and in short term it's better to upgrade existing energy grids and technology efficiency rather than promote new sources, but I guess that's how modern investments work.

| Quote steeljaw354 ( ) they may create black holes that could devour earth.
The total world energy production during the year 2012 was 5.6x1020 joules (source: IEA), or an average production rate of 1.8x1013 joules per second.
Consider a single fusion reactor capable of producing power at this rate (being generous). Suppose that all of the energy the reactor produces over a whole hour (about 1015 joules) instead... somehow... goes into creating a black hole. (Being VERY generous).
1) What would be the mass of this black hole? 2) What is the radius of its event horizon? 3) How strong is the gravitational acceleration at a distance of 1cm from it? 4) What is the timescale for it to evaporate by Hawking radiation?
Do you still think fusion reactors are a threat for the reasons you posted?

| steeljaw354, you made an argument that fusion reactors are bad for the environment. You claimed that you had "looked it up" and read that they might create black holes that would devour the Earth. You even followed this with "Nuclear power plants are bad too", which clearly indicates you knew you were originally talking about fusion and not fission (not that this distinction even matters for sake of forming an Earth-devouring black hole.)
You were asked, twice, to give a citation for these claims. You have failed to do so. You were also shown that the claim is physically impossible by a simple application of physics. You were asked to reflect on your previous notions on the safety of fusion reactors in light of that demonstration. You have failed to do so.
Take 3 days off from the forum to think about what it means to sincerely engage in a conversation. Right now your posts are indistinguishable from trolling.

| With the Nuclear aside, this world is a Horrible place, terrorism acts, wars in the middle east, possible climate change. You don't need links if you were paying attention the recent news. I fear the worst for this planet. Nuclear plants like Chernobyl can be catastrophic if they explode. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disaster I'm talking about Nuclear Power Plants. Previous notions aside. Forget what I said.
Some areas may be peaceful but with the Paris attacks I fear not. We need to unite if we are to survive, and get off this planet and expand out into the solar system. Divided we fall, united we stand. Think about what the Iroquois did before the 5 tribes fought each other, when they united they were stronger, we need to unite on the Global level. Citation needed? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iroquois or if you payed attention in History class.

| I don't like having robots with minds of their own, as long as they are programmed so they won't rebel and can't be changed. I don't like the thought of downloading clothes or becoming a cyborg, I'll stay as human as I can be. People should be using large solar panels and windmills at power plants instead of fossil fuels. I'd do the walking myself instead of using a hoverboard or a hover craft.

| Quote steeljaw354 ( ) I don't like having robots with minds of their own
Why?
Quote steeljaw354 ( ) as long as they are programmed so they won't rebel and can't be changed.
Why would they have a cause to rebel?
Quote steeljaw354 ( ) I'll stay as human as I can be.
Because being human is a wonderful this
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_genetic_disorders https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_congenital_disorders https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cancer_types https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cutaneous_conditions https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki....sorders https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endocrine_disease https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_disease https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_gastrointestinal_tract#Disease https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_infectious_diseases
And many more fun things that come from a poorly designed "whatever works for reproduction" system. There is nothing special about being human, we are little more than a clever ape.
Cybernetics, advanced computers, AI, and genetic reprogramming will cure all these things and give near indefinite lifespans. If growing old and slowly dying is your sort of thing thats your choice but I will go the route that leads to the longest possible life.
Quote steeljaw354 ( ) People should be using large solar panels and windmills at power plants instead of fossil fuels
That wouldn't work without acres of land dedicated to solar panels and wind turbines.
