Interstellar vessel inspired by- you guessed it- the Venture star from Avatar. I took some artistic liberties due to some limitations in the editor/lack of parts to make a totally accurate replica. (The engines should be angled so they fire slightly outward) The living sections will spin (unlike in the movie).

Wow, that's actually a pretty good recreation werdna, nice job. Care to share the .json file for it?

Also... do you have to always attach so many screenshots? This site's storage capacity - and some users' bandwidth - are limited.

Also, you should have put it in orbit around Pandora tongue

Sorry. Should I take any down?

Why thank you very much! Here is the json file (see attached).

EDIT: A question that's been on my mind for a while is: why are they called .json files? Is this a roman approximation of some Russian letters?

EDIT 2 :

Also, you should have put it in orbit around Pandora

I got rid of Pandora from my catalog since the only parts of Avatar I really liked were in orbit (the ISV, and the Valkyrie- if only the engine placement was more accurate; I'd pay a trillion dollars for one (if I had a trillion dollars). Also, I thought Vladimir said he was thinking about/planning on getting rid of that since it's fictional?

Actually, I can't even remember what I did to get rid of it or how to put it back.

No, just keep in mind for future reference.

No. It stands for JavaScript Object Notation.

He's going to deactivate it by default, you can still reactivate it in the universe.cfg file, just like with SolarSys3000. And yeah, I turned mine off too happy

Wow, thanks guys!

The 20 degree FOV really helps since a couple shots in the film had really low FOV- it must have been like 10 degrees. Also, regarding the front- I put the hyperdrive object there, but the idea is that it's some kind of active/magnetic shielding device- I doubt the physical shield would be enough to stop (gasp!) a hydrogen atom at really high speeds. Also, notice that there's a solar sail; it would extend from the end of that area right between the radiators.

The reason I made it was to hold me over until those cool new models become available with 0.97.

I have made a ship, for interstellar travel.

It have three independent parts : one for propulsion, one for storage, and one for living.

Absense of the shield is a weak part of the Venture Star concept. At 0.75 c any 1-mm size dust grain will completely destroy the ship. It is protected at 3 of 6 stages:

1) Acceleration from Earth - laser beam from Solar System pushes the sail, but some small part of it is missing the sail evaporates a dust and meteors in front of the ship.
2) Free flying at 0.75 c - no protection.
3) Decceleration at Pandora - jets from the engines are directed forward and evaporates dust and meteors. However, there is a significant angle between engines, so it may not work.
4) Acceleration from Pandora - engines beams are directed backward, so there is no protection.
5) Free flying at 0.75 c - no protection.
6) Deceleration at Earth - laser beam cleans the space in front of the ship.

Ship is also unprotected when it turns in the center of the path (or in the point between the stages), and unprotected from heating by interstellar gas and plasma from destroyed dust particles. At 0.75 c it will be heated to thousands of degrees.

You're right about all this, of course, but it's miles ahead in terms of realism compared to other ships in movies these days- at least James Cameron cares about realistic technology in his movies; he's by no stretch of the imagination in the same league as Stanley Kubrick, but he's better than- well, J.J. Abrams, for example.
I wouldn't seriously suggest that a venturestar-type ship would be possible. Besides, it would take many, many years (millions???) to produce the amount of antimatter needed to power the ship.

Interesting how the biggest challenges in interstellar travel are the size of a speck of dust, especially considering the other engineering difficulties. smile

I like to think that by the time we can make that amount of antimatter we shouldn't need to waste it on ships only capable of ~0.7c and instead could be using the energy to power ships capable of warp travel.

Just for mention, Venture star has at least 4 - stage physical shield.

During free flying it is detached from ship and travels in several hundreds kilometers in front of it. It should be enough to significantly spread all gas and dust.
Also, it does not turn in the middle of travel.
