| I randomly caught Daily Planet mention the Oculus VR on their Digit@l segment a while ago. I was amazed!
Quote (HarbingerDawn) Quote (DoctorOfSpace) Seems like this would only be useful for free mode or when a first person walking mode is added. Can't see a 3D view being of any real use though when in space.
Agreed It wouldn't necessarily be very useful in that respect, you two are right. But... --> I think it should be utilized for the immersion factor! Could you imagine the feeling...faced with the Pleiades in front of you with a 110 degree total field of view? I believe it would enrich Free Mode like none other.
Quote (DoctorOfSpace) I would wait a few years for a retail model to come out and for more support. But alas, this is my conclusion too I think. Though I seriously think this would be awesome to implement.

This is exactly the reason i would want it!

| This. This right here. The Rift needs to be supported. I'm ordering a developer model, and one of my research projects over the summer will be to write a video player for the Rift to play fisheye movies, so I can share my Planetarium shows to anyone with one. But to be able to actually navigate the Universe directly inside the Rift would be truly an unparalleled experience! We need to buy SpaceEngineer one!

| Quote (DoctorOfSpace) Can't see a 3D view being of any real use though when in space. Strap one on in deep space, tilt your head down... and say that again.
The 3D effect goes both ways. When you look at your monitor with SE on, your eyes are converging at the monitor's surface. With the OR on, your eyes are converging at infinity - essentially both are pointing in parallel directions. Your brain interprets this as extreme distance...
So, while still feeling the pull of gravity from the real world, you look down into an infinite abyss of starry nothingness (or should that be everythingness?)... I hope you're not scared of heights
I do hope the coding to support the OR isn't heavy - because from watching the reactions of journalists who were given playtests, it seems to be the next-best-thing to The Matrix, and I want in.
EDIT:
I was thinking - while normal human binocular disparity (the distance between your eyes) would be great for immersion in space and observing the surface of planets, you could have a slider that adjusts the disparity, from centimetres all the way up to megaparsecs, to give you a sense of depth of the image you are seeing.
It'd be like growing yourself into a cosmic giant, or shrinking the universe down to pint-size.
This XKCD illustrates the idea with a slightly more Earthly subject:

| I think Rift support should be added. First, from the commercial point of view, it good to show that this engine is versatile enough to create games with this kind of immersion. Second, since this product is under a heavy dose of media hype, it attracts attention to SpaceEngine (think about a link to SpaceEngine website on Oculus' page). Third and most important, I'm buying one

| One issue that should be mentioned is the desired FPS, which should reach at least 60 frames per second, andI'm not sure what configuration it could run smoothly. But even so, I hope to OR support, I am byuing one too.:) Added (14.04.2013, 00:50) --------------------------------------------- Vladimir, I very much appreciate your work and love space engine game. if you're interested, this is the place, where you can download SDK for Oculus Rift for free (after simple registration) and consider implementation into your engine.
https://developer.oculusvr.com/?action=dl
There are already a few people who own the device and will be excited to test i for you. Moreover, it can raise your prestige and attract more fans. After the releasing Rift, virtual reality took a second wind and you could benefit from it now.
Thats my suggestion,
your big fan, Tomas.

| I totally agree. When I first found Space Engine, the Rift is one of the first things I thought of (because I knew I was getting one when I saw it appear in PC Gamer... I think it was that magazine). <i>However</i>, I am of the opinion that the SE environment should be crafted to the linking of its developer, before VR technology is implemented.

| Just to let you guys know, Titans of Space is already getting some nice attention from all the Oculus VR stuff, the game is just a simple tour thing in near space, but the effect is really good.
The games page: http://www.crunchywood.com/ (it's free)
The games forum post on oculus forums: https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=1544 (people are loving it!)
So yeah, i would love to see my favorite space engine with some Oculus support.

| The 1080p Oculus rift looks very good, heard incredibly positive feedback.
Should be fantastic for Space Engine and similar software. Star Citizen is supporting Rift.
One problem seems to be is reading complex UI text, finding those keys with the headset on.
To get the full field of view with Space Engine would be immense. I'm certainly buying the retail version, I'm hoping for higher res than 1080p as well.

| Having tried it with various demo's/games its a HUGE YES for Space Engine, it would absolutely incredible..I have never felt such immersion even from the low res dev kit. When I did the Rollercoaster demo I FELT the height going up, and coming down the tingle in my tummy it was terrifying..it was GREAT! I kept telling my brain..'this isn't real!' but it was ignoring me..Occulus is the truly a break thru and to fly around the universe in full VR 3D..you wont wanna take it off..
