| Quote (SpaceEngineer) There will be no games for Linux until programmers stop using DirectX and switch to OpenGL. Because DX is a Microsoft's API and only available for Windows. Of course we can't expect that Microsoft makes a Linux version of DX
Edit: And they should stop creating games for consoles, because they are DX again
Edit2: Maybe this is a cause why 99% of games are DX based. The market is a god here SpaceEngineer You need test with SpaceEngine from virtual machine. SpaceEngine will be support OS X, Linux and Windows 8.
You need best virtual machine: Oracle VM VirtualBox: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VirtualBox
Site: http://www.virtualbox.org
Don't forget with instructions: https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch01.html
MS Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit SP1 Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.20GHz, 2,0GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260

| Hey there!
I'd also like support for Linux, and I'd also love to see the code being open sourced, but absolutely not because of some philosophical bullshit or because of security or whatever. Simply for practical reasons:
- If you open-source your code (or part of it), you'll get lot of support in the development of your engine. For instance, I'd be very interested in helping you to port your game to Linux if you open-source it. But if we can't see the code, nobody can help you.
There are loads of open-source licenses out there that would let you get all your contributor's code and still make a profit out of your game once you decide to sell it. There exists many examples of open-source software that still sell very well, which is very commonly seen on the Android market, for instance.
Authors will put their app for sell on the Play Store for say, 4-5$, while the code for the app is available for free on github.com . Most people will still buy the app from the market, as:
a. They don't know how to compile it anyway. b. They don't want to bother compiling it and prefer paying and save themselves the trouble. c. They want to pay a fair price to the author for their time.
I'd say a and b are the biggest factor in the equation. Anyway, if somebody wants to get your game for free, they'll get a crack and get it anyway. So really, open-sourcing your code would not go against making a profit out of it! In fact, it would accelerate the speed at which you develop your game. Finally, you could simply open-source your engine and concentrate on implementing the game side of your game, which you could keep closed source if you wish. You'd get the advantages of faster development for your engine, and more time to concentrate on the profitable part (the game itself).
Quote (StarCmd) First it say that OpenGL is to old (2.1). That's all Apple's fault as they have been too stubborn to update their OpenGL implementation for years. Now I guess their problem (Lion should support OpenGL 3.2) lies in graphic drivers that need to catch up.
See this (the guy talks of Snow Leopard, but Apple only included a kinda *recent* OpenGL implementation): http://www.starstonesoftware.com/OpenGL/mac.htm

| I just downloaded SpaceEngine and was happy to see that it ran on Linux using wine out of the box. I have a quadcore (8 cores with hyperthreading), but SpaceEngine only seems to use one core. Is SpaceEngine single threaded, or do I need to tell wine somehow that applications can use more cores?
Anyway, everything still runs blindingly fast.

| SE is single threading. Multithreading will be in the next version.

| Yes, maybe SpaceEngeener will loose some cusomer appeal because SpaceEngine is not a Open/GNU project. But Linux is not so much geekware anymore. it is becoming mainstream. That would be the target Audiance.
Example; just cause Steam is on Linux doesn't mean that they are going to release code of they're client, or the games being released for Linux are compelled to release code for Linux. Same thing with SpaceEngine.
This is a sign of matureity for Linux/BSD

| Quote SpaceEngineer ( ) Why do all linux users want to see source code? Is it an obsession with security? I am not a hacker and don't dream accessing your home folders. And I cannot share the SE source code, as long as I plan to make a commercial game with it.
Wow! a game with this engine, the first thought I had after seeing this app for the first time, I was about to make a post about if you could open source the app or share it to find a way making an epic space sim and trading game with it. Anyway what is the game you where planning to make? Great app btw.

| Quote d4yw41k3r ( ) Wikipedia sez yes. Then whoever edited that article was wrong. While SE will be ported to Linux in the future, it is currently Windows-only.

| Quote d4yw41k3r ( ) So is there a space engine LINUX version or not? Not officially, but you will likely be able to run it on x86 Linux out of the box if you have Wine installed. I've tried it on several computers.

It works OOTB! Almost...
Only when I quit the program my screen is freezing (you still see the main menu but it wont disappear) and my MATE desktop background is gone, all windows leave their traces on the desktop... have to logoff and login.

| I'm really hoping for a Linux version soon, because this used to be, like, my favourite thing. I even used it for a couple of school projects. But now I'm on Linux and running it through wine and the stars look like ( http://i.imgur.com/IDIMBdu.png ), and planets look like ( http://i.imgur.com/UOAtt5z.png ).
And, it's bumming me out.
