| Quote (Ignuus66) What about Unison? (Took Unisim and changed it to what It reminded me of) It's not a unique name.
Also, I'm going to admit that I'm (not surprisingly) biased towards my own suggestion.

| Fractalis? The whole system of planets, stars, solar systems, galaxies, etc is kinda like a fractal.
Ouroboros? Neverending.
Ouranos, or Aether? Greek gods of the sky and space.

| Aether already exists as a game.. Ouroboros is the snake encircling the world, biting its own tail and represents the cycles, but not necessarily never-endingness in the sense of inifinity...
I'm still partial to Voidscape
But, if we're going for something more.. esoteric, might I suggest Nu(n)?
Nun was, in ancient Egyptian mythology, the embodiment of the Great Watery Abyss (Nu) - what we would consider 'chaos', maximum entropy, the uniform state from which the maximum amount of configurations is possible. It was from the Watery Abyss that the universe was brought forth by Atum, the divine potter, whom had first created himself... Anyways, Nu is the chaos from which all that is, has been, might have been, will be, might be, etc. comes forth, which, in an infinite universe, might nicely represent the freedom of choice and direction?

| Obscurity isn't something you want in the name, IMHO. By that, I mean if it takes a paragraph just to describe the name to the average person, this is a strong indicator that the name isn't a good idea. It carries the risk of alienating people new to the subject- consider SE's potential as a way to popularize astronomy. Any initial obscurity also has some potential to cause confusion for newcomers.
Quote (Jabberwockxeno6109) Fractalis? The whole system of planets, stars, solar systems, galaxies, etc is kinda like a fractal. This is an interesting point, but there are actual fractal generation programs out there, and its kind of misleading, IMO. When you think about it, all procedural programs are like fractals in some way.
What do you guys think about Unisim?
EDIT: Quote (Methis) I'm still partial to Voidscape It sounds cool, but sort of implies SE is devoid of content. A landscape has land. A seascape has water. A voidscape has... Voids? See what I mean?

| simply The Search or The Great Search as in historical period in which the game takes place. Unisim is an option for planetarium but does not reflect the essence of the game, which is about invention of ftl technology and humanities first steps into outer space.

I wouldn't be too definitive on that. Eve seems to be quite a thriving game. So was X in its own right.
Suggestions of mine:
These are names taken either directly from Astronomy terms or slightly modified from them, and can be used to base on a storyline, or on a focusing concept of the game in whatever fashion. I also post these to potentially be used for inspiring more original ideas for a good name. My philosophy is also "short, sweet, catchy, broad" to keep it sounding epic, a bit mysterious, and flexible to whatever would be in store for the player.
- Eon
- Azimuth
- Blueshift
- Redshift
- Stellarius
- Ion
- Lunara
- Plerion
- Zenith
- Precession
- Flux
- Luminosity
- Meridia
- Saros
- Parabola
- Messierus
- Spectra
- Zion
I also stand behind two others' suggestions:
- Ascension
- Beyond

| Quote (neutronium76) Space Engine: Explorers of The Coscmic Abyss That's a little bit lengthy. I don't think that anyone would ever take the time to say that, type it, or even read it. I can't think of any successful game off the top of my head that's had a long name. It should be no more than 5 or 6 syllables long.

| Quote (neutronium76) Unisim sounds like a simulator program for unix OSs Yes, I guess it does, as it stands for "universe simulator" (it is a simulation game); I think it's the perfect name. Yes, it's a made-up word, but not just for the sake of sounding cool as it describes what Space Engine is. Remembering that "Unisim" stands for "universe simulator" ought to be very, very easy for anyone, so the meaning of the name isn't ambiguous. The question "what is Unisim supposed to mean?" has a short and explainable two word answer.
It's nonspecific to any part of space or culture. Any reference to a known (specific) astronomical object will be utterly meaningless when you are exploring nearby stars in a galaxy 6 gigaparsecs from the Milky Way. For any celestial object one can name, in SE there will be countless other very similar objects of the same type among the millions of galaxies.
