Please post here all of your reports about bugs or crashes in SpaceEngine. Before you post any bugs, please follow these steps:

  • First of all, make sure you make a clean install of SpaceEngine and update your video card drivers. This may solve 99% of all isues.
  • Read the Fixing common issues section below. It is possible that your problem can be solved there.
  • Read the List of known issues section below and make sure that your bugs are not on in it. You can use your browser's word finder to help search the list.
  • If the bug is not on the list then please post it in this thread. Attach to your message a screenshot (if possible) and a log file (it's called the se.log and is located in the SpaceEngine/system/ directory). Only the log file will help us to understand your problem and find a solution!

    Fixing videocard-specific issues

If you do not know which videocard do you have, open the system/se.log file in the text editor and read the Vendor information in the beginning:

    INITIALIZING OPENGL
    [MT] Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.

Then look for a solution for you:

    Nvidia: Major lag spikes

ATI/AMD: Transparent or invisible planets, no landscape

ATI/AMD: Crash on approaching to the black hole, neutron star or white dwarf, on using ship's hyperdrive, or when enabling the Oculus Rift mode or the Fish Eye mode

Intel HD: Glitchy landscape and textures on planets

    Intel HD: Crash near planets

Intel HD: Red clouds on Earth

    Fixing common issues

    1) Obsolete or incompatible drivers or strange error message "(NULL) 2.1 (NULL)"

    2) Weak system

    3) System with hybrid graphics (NVidia/ATI + Intel HD)

    4) Artifacts on procedural planets

    5) Frequent crashing while generating planetary surface

    6) Spaceship disappears when far from a star

    7) Blurry textures on Solar system planets

    8) Crash on entering the Display menu

    9) Problems with very high resolution displays

    List of known issues

Green items have been fixed for the next release

Not real bugs, but effects caused by limitations in the engine:

    Real bugs:

I am reporting a bug regarding white giants appearing black. I am posting a screenshot and my log file.

Looks like you may have pressed "N" which turns off lights.

Tuskin, a lot of people have reported some issues with recent AMD video drivers. Copying Doc's recommendation from elsewhere, "uninstall all AMD drivers, reboot, and then do a clean install on the latest drivers". Some people also report older drivers giving better results (14.4 and earlier, IIRC). And remember to delete the SE cache folder before running it again.

Also try changing this from the main.cfg

    MipmapsMode 2 // mipmaps generation mode: 0 - disable, 1 - default OpenGL function, 2 - SpaceEngine function

    to

    MipmapsMode 1 // mipmaps generation mode: 0 - disable, 1 - default OpenGL function, 2 - SpaceEngine function

Even MipmapsMode 0 causes it to crash, but changing it to EnableMipmapsWarp false helps. smile Graphics card limitations, I know.

Yep, that would be the problem! My apologies for wasting space and starting off SE 0.9.7.2 with a bit of stupidity.

Makes me glad my next card is going to be an Nvidia.

I did a full fresh install of my drivers, changed the mipmap settings, and cleared the cache.

None of the suggestions worked, I don't really feel like downgrading my drivers and loose the optimizations for my other games. Thanks for the help though, I'll just have to use it on my Laptop for now, and wait for my new Nvidia card before using it on my PC.

Check that it's not caused by a joystick or gamepad, and go into the settings menu and clear the joystick assignments in the camera tab, if there are any.

Well, the title says it all, some planets but not all are transparent, no water or landmasses, just atmosphere and clouds (and the clouds are buggy, not always totally displayed):

The above screenshot is the planet that you can access using the "Tidally locked lifeterra" location (the last one in the list).

My graphics card is a Radeon HD 6870 with the latest drivers. I had not such problems with v0.9.7.1... Any idea?

Rhalph, read the first couple of pages here, some posts contain suggestions for users with AMD cards. And please read the forum rules before posting in the future.

Yeah I read that post, didn't see anything related to "transparent" planets...
I know I have an AMD card, but I can't downgrade to old drivers because these ones are causing issues to some new games.
So what do I do? Forget SpaceEngine until new drivers are released that hopefully fix the problem? huh
