Second round!

The next version will have built-in music player (finally it work!). Several musicians have offered their works for the SE. To date, I have accumulated approximately 400 MB of music, here's a list:

Voting chart

If it not open, try the direct link:

Second round results

This is an unprocessed table, created automatically by Google Docs. You can download it in the MS Excel format and process (transpose, compute average, sort):
link

Download music

Part 1 - 350 Mb (Google Drive)
Part 2 - 68 Mb (Google Drive)
Part 3 - 11 Mb (Google Drive)

Part 1 - 350 Mb (Yandex.Disk)

There are some problems like mistakes and typos in the file names, and very different volume of various tracks. I hope authors will fox them before release. But the most great problem is that not all of these tracks are suitable for space flying experience. So I purpose you to listen entire playlist (while playing SE!) and choose best 10-15 of them. And of course this will reduce the distribution size (350 Mb of music is too much!). Built-in player will have context switching feature, so there may be a theme for main menu, a theme for interstellar flight, a theme to atmosphere descent, a theme for water planet (let me guess, what biggrin ), etc.

We may make s sort of poll. SE site does not support a poll with more than 10 points, so I made a chart using Google docs. You may rate tracks you like with a rank from 1 to 5 (1 - bad, 5 - best). After that, we will choose 10-15 best tracks for SpaceEngine.

New tracks from Goodstreet! Enjoy!

They added to the end of the voting chart, you may rate them only, if you already rate other tracks.

My suggestion is to make it possible to listen to them online. No long downloads anymore. Stream them. And have a voting feature right beside the streamable music, so voting can be done right away and very comfortably.

I like the music of Jean-Michel Jarre, and of Vangelis. Music for Space Engine should be inspired by them. I am going to listen now to the songs and vote...

Okay, I voted. I listened to the soundtracks not as dance music or regular songs to listen to, but under the condition of soundtracks that will repeat often, play endlessly, and have to make a descent background for spending hours in the game.

Soundtracks with loud hip hop rhythms I gave a lower rating, soundtracks with not much contrast I gave a higher rating as they have to line up with each other for many hours.

There were only two soundtracks I gave the full 5 points. One of them had some sound effects in it that could be interpreted as alien life forms, but in a descent way. That soundtrack inspired me, and fits greatly to what Space Engine is about: alien worlds, with or without life.

Having listened to all soundtracks, I strongly would want to encourage all sound artists, to use more alienized FXs in their musics, and to abandon dance rhythms. Concentrate on long-lasting, spherical sounds. Add strange-sounding FXs, like modified whale singing, but only a few of them, not too often. Add also short sequences of strange sub rhythms, fading in and out, like you pass by an alien world and can hear the pulse of their alien civilization. Add starnge-sounding speech segments of aliens. And also a very few natural sounds, like storm, wind, fire, rain, drops, waves, and such. This all is what is in our minds when we imagine other worlds. Coming close to a star, let the music transfer or get an underlaying of some hot percussion of Geiger counter clicks (measuring radioactivity), or so. Also, listen to the start music of the German version of the 1980s cartoon series "Captain Future" - their title song could inspire a possible start-up theme for Space Engine, except the beat rhythm sequence somewhere in the middle of the Captain Future theme soundtrack.

So a bit like a built-in Spotify-like system, with ratings? I second this idea.

The game 'Pioneer space simulator' has 2 soundtracks, which are, in my opinion, a lot like what you're describing. I'm not really sure if you mean soundtracks like these though.

Click here to download these soundtracks (.ogg, files, you can use them in SE!)

I wish SE had more soundtracks like these. Overall, I agree with what you said.

I will be inactive on this forum for the time being. Might come back eventually

I'm a big fan of Super Fata. I contacted him to see if he had any interests in submitting tracks for use in Space Engine. What do you guys think?
