Second round!

The next version will have built-in music player (finally it work!). Several musicians have offered their works for the SE. To date, I have accumulated approximately 400 MB of music, here's a list:

Voting chart

link

If it not open, try the direct link:

First round results

average rank / file name

Second round results

This is an unprocessed table, created automatically by Google Docs. You can download it in the MS Excel format and process (transpose, compute average, sort):
link

Download music

Part 1 - 350 Mb (Google Drive)
Part 2 - 68 Mb (Google Drive)
Part 3 - 11 Mb (Google Drive)

Part 1 - 350 Mb (Yandex.Disk)

There are some problems like mistakes and typos in the file names, and very different volume of various tracks. I hope authors will fox them before release. But the most great problem is that not all of these tracks are suitable for space flying experience. So I purpose you to listen entire playlist (while playing SE!) and choose best 10-15 of them. And of course this will reduce the distribution size (350 Mb of music is too much!). Built-in player will have context switching feature, so there may be a theme for main menu, a theme for interstellar flight, a theme to atmosphere descent, a theme for water planet (let me guess, what biggrin ), etc.

We may make s sort of poll. SE site does not support a poll with more than 10 points, so I made a chart using Google docs. You may rate tracks you like with a rank from 1 to 5 (1 - bad, 5 - best). After that, we will choose 10-15 best tracks for SpaceEngine.

This music is awesome, SpaceEngineer. biggrin I'd like to put my votes here in my post for now, and when the google docs link is working I'll transfer the votes over there, too.

My impressions (posted here for now since the poll link is not working). Wrote notes next to a few tracks.

Careful. The PLATT Collective has spurs.

No, and I'm not going to. Any application that spawns multiple processes like that is the devil's work, and can kindly keep off my hard drive.

I've never tried Chrome and it's the first time I've heard about that, but apart from becoming less vulnerable for crashes and security issues, and becoming faster due to the parallelism and having a basic design for the future that is becoming more and more multicore, what are the downsides?

Certainly, threads are potentially more efficient and can also save memory (though multiple process can and will share memory as well and modern OS's should handle context switches efficiently). In a perfect world threads are to be preferred. Browsers, however, are big beasts and I can understand the design decision, if the design only goes as far as to address the issues mentioned and not acting as a pretext for avoiding the pitfalls of threaded concurrency.

Perhaps I should give Chrome a try. While Firefox has become pretty stable over the years, I can't imagine something else, even if it uses many processes, much more resource hungry. My current Firefox process:

Code
PID USER      PR  NI  VIRT  RES  SHR S  %CPU %MEM    TIME+  COMMAND
32357 steinar   20   0 2147m 532m  49m S   6.1  3.3 174:43.04 firefox

Meaning that it's using 2GB of memory of which half a GB is currently in physical memory. Perhaps acceptable when I have 16 GB, but it's still hard to account for. It's only been running for a couple of days.

Getting back on topic... There are some scores that don't fit in at all: Battle theme, Flight, Microorganics, Blueshift, Evening Breeze and Space Theme. As for the rest, much sounds similar. Aiming for some degree of variation would be great, but I'm not sure how that could work through a vote. Reducing the number of songs by picking those with the highest scores could lead to a collection of very similar sounding ones.

All web browsers I've used use similar amounts of memory; generally the more memory your system has, the more each app will appropriate for itself, unless it's an extremely small and efficient one. So with a 16 GB system numbers like that pop up all over the place.

The poll is working now! Yay!

Greg Zemskov - Sun.ogg --- 5 (crop some of it and it would be perfect menu music [or credits music ]!)

Greg Zemskov has send me a versions of these tracks splited in two parts. But they are too short IMO.

Quote (HarbingerDawn)
Slambeatz - Waterplanet (converted from mp3).ogg --- 2

Why 2? I like it:)

We just have different opinions I guess smile It's ok, but the "whale sounds" are kind of disruptive when flying in SE, and that's why I give it a 2.

If we want to use specific parts for specific purposes we can always crop those parts ourselves. We would just need permission from the author before releasing it with SE. Anyway, some of these things can be changed in the future, right now it's more important just to choose a smaller selection of tracks to use smile

Voting results:

https://docs.google.com/forms....alytics

In a table form:

https://docs.google.com/spreads....E#gid=0

It is not easy to analyze, some editing in the MS Excel required.

Edit: Someone rate "5" for each track. Maybe it was a bug. I edit the table and remove this and empty answers.

"Dolz - Immersion - 03" very much reminds me a soundtrack from "Spore"

It still sounds the same in either case, and I personally don't like the sound of it. But if other people like it then great, include it smile

Chart was broken when I added them into it, so I will create a new one. Second round of voting smile
