Well, in astronomy it can be argued that "canals" do not imply construction, from a mistranslation from Italian "canali" which says nothing about its construction. English has the word "channel", though.

Why on earth would we use a mistranslation of an Italian word to describe these things when English already has adequate terms? Also, it's not an astronomical term, it's a word that was used one time in history by some people who believed that Mars was populated. Most notably Percival Lowell.
