Actually, you should be able to download it in about 16 minutes if you get all the 5 Mbps bandwidth. But I just started an upgrade of a pc to Kubuntu 13.04, which is about 2GB, and this will affect my uplink as well for the next 25 minutes or so. Sorry about that. :/

Asynchronous loading mode is the multithreaded mode, and it is enabled by default, so unless you've changed the loader mode then it should be multithreaded. Keep in mind that the multithreading is only useful when flying through the stars and galaxys so that they generate at high speed. Generation of planetary systems (which is what happens when you use the star browser) is not affected by the multithreading if I'm not mistaken.
When flying through the galaxy at high speed and generating stars all of my cores are used and the star generation rate is fantastic. If that's not the case for you then maybe it's a Linux issue somehow, or something else on your end.
