Nice, it works perfectly for me. It's probably because I have an ATI video card, too.

I tried it on an old laptop of mine with an ATI card and it worked perfectly as well. I think the shader is read a bit differently on ATI so such a high setting doesn't ruin the planet.

You can also edit these 2 lines to mix up the way the gas giants look.

Code

          twistedPoint *= 666.0 + 5.0 * turbulence;
          twistedPoint.y *= 735.0 + turbulence * twistMagn;

Also updated the first post in thread with the value reset to 10.0 on the Octave thing. I found in debug mode if I reload the shader with that it is no different than 99.9

I did a cache reset and... nothing happened, so it looks like it's safe to clean out the cache, but probably not neccesary.

Also, it'd be nice if there were some more variety in the jupiter style gas giants and have the detail that there was before.

I've seen a few greyscale gas giants, but they were in a system with other gas giants of a more normal color. Theres also some brownish gas giants, but then again, Jupiter is brownish anyway.

This one is kind of neat looking, but it looks kind of washed out of color. Then again, it's orbiting a red dwarf.

Edit: This is what I mean by greyscale gas giants.

I loaded up the backup briefly to see what it would normally look like (and help track down which one is the problem).

Edit: And another with modded and unmodded. Also, the rings seem to be flipped in the modded version.

That greyscale thing is to be expected and I noticed that about the rings before I posted it. What I did is not a new shader at all. I just put the height shader inside the color shader file. I didn't even expect it to work really, but it did and i liked the effect and Harb. asked me to post it.

I plan on learning more about how shaders function, but until then this is the best it is going to be from me.

Theres nothing wrong with the flipped rings really, I was just making an observation.

I'm update a gas giant shaders, nothing special, just fixing some mistakes, so now gas giants looks like they should. Updated shader in the attachment, copy it to the data/shaders. Screenshots before and after:

And, changing something in the code, making gas giants more smooth (but this will be available in the next version):

Cool, so the variety would be back in I bet?

Also, did you check out the cause of the greyscale shaded gas giants?

Looks good, Harb. wanted me to ask about that.

I may also take a look at that one and tweak it a bit tongue

Also, did you check out the cause of the greyscale shaded gas giants?

I guess it was the same mistake as Doc did in the terrestrial planets clouds shader: ignoring GetSurfaceColor() function.

I love the variety that's back in smile

Maybe this one is a little too neon? I don't know.

Not sure if this one is greyscale or more of a 'brownscale', but it's different. The orange dwarf might be tinting it a bit anyway.

No shader upload just yet I am still checking it over.

Some images as I have started tweaking and messing around with it a bit.

Still not quite sure what direction I want to take these in. Any ideas?

Also thanks for fixing up the shaders making this possible Space Engineer cool

Edit:

After a long while of messing with the gas giant variations I finally got something I liked for all the different ones you can find. Got the solid colors to be more mixed too.

This is a new tg_gas_giant_height file, not the color. This works in conjunction with Space Engineer's uploaded color file.

Screens

Shader is attached to this post. If you don't mind Space Engineer I would love to know what I messed up this time tongue

So this is going to be in the official game? Allow me to soil myself in awe.

Yeah thats no good

Here is a link to his and mine. For mine you will need his color file. Messed up on the archive, dragged and dropped wrong shader files into the archive. Changed link to just my height, his color is on next page.

^Are you sure SE's file is in there? Because it's called tg_gasgiant_col.glsl in his post, but there's only tg_clouds_color.glsl and height in the folder.
