I love Dawkins' documentaries! I wish he would do more.

I don't think a single person around here knows the difference between "your" and "you're".

It gets even worse when people don't know how to use "to", "two", and "too". Or when people don't know how to use they're, their, and there.

Is this really a problem in English speaking countries?

I meant in "real life". People just write whatever they please in youtube comments and the writers can be from all over the world, so they don't really count.

I don't almost ever use facebook, so i wouldn't know. Besides, all my friends speak Finnish.

I stopped using FB a long time ago when I saw how much of a pointless self indulgence fest it was.

It does happen in classrooms all the time. The amount of poor grammar I saw in most of my college courses was cringe worthy.

How is that possible? Almost every person in my grade writes perfect English and I have been fluent in writing English for about 4 years now, and i'm 18.

When you learn a language later in life, through a formal education, you tend to be better at that language than native speakers by the time you reach fluency, because you learn all the technicalities and the proper way of doing things when you learn it

rather than just picking things up haphazardly from what you hear those around you saying over the years.

Well they started teaching English in school when i was about 10, so it's not that late in life.

This is actually how i learned most of my English. Movies, games and the Internet teach English much better than school IMO, although shcool is still important.

Yes, but that is an incredibly minor influence on the development of our English speaking and writing habits compared to what we encounter 24 hours a day. 180 hours per year of (mediocre) technical English instruction is insignificant on the development of linguistic habits for native English speakers.

But school lays an important foundation, and movies, games, etc. are going to expose you to more proper English than random interaction with native speakers would, especially if these involve subtitles/written words. Since English has a lot of words that are not spelled in a phonetically logical manner, and has quite a few homophones, many people get them confused.

They do not start on real proper grammar until 2nd and 3rd grade. Some schools start in 1st grade but it all depends where you live.
