| Quote You're preaching to the choir man, I say the same thing all the time. I'm not a big fan of my countrymen. There are many out there who aren't complete idiots, but who busy themselves in absolutely frivolous pursuits and just add to the problem anyway. It makes me sad, and I've long considered moving to another country one day. Canada most likely (cool weather and dark skies, and they speak English I agree. It's very sad, and I one day hope to move to a country not like America at all. Country name? Sweden. Cold wheather, longer nights (sometimes) and about 50% speak English (I still have to learn Swedish), and many more have the Science skill I do. By the way, I'm replying to an old post!
I'm back, but am I here to stay? Hopefully!

The two biggest impediments would be the distance, and learning a new language and adapting to a new culture. Canada is just easier to move to, but in the long term if the USA starts to go under it would be best to leave the continent altogether.

The grass is always greener on the other side. The Swedes themselves go to Norway for work. Norwegians go to Sweden for, um, food shopping. The Swedes have the Nobel prizes though, except the piece prize thing, handled by Norwegians who dropped out of school to become politicians and administered accordingly, which is becoming quite a yearly embarrassment.

As a person who has visited both Norway and Sweden, i can say that both Finland and Norway are superior to Sweden on many areas.

Naturally we're often inclined to think that where we are is less than ideal, and that that ideal exists somewhere else (usually somewhere specific). That's part of being human. Sometimes, however, it's really true. It depends mostly on individual factors.

| I've recently discovered the venus project.
I really hope this can become successful. I know it's been mentioned before on the forum but still, a society where the best possible education is available to everyone is amazing! I can only hope our society can grow into this, but I highly doubt it. It's probably best that our politicians keep making fools of themselves so people realize how uneducated they really are.
Once everyone has a high standard of living, they'll get bored... and decide to learn about something constructive. Also, this is the kind of society I would imagine would be portrayed in Space Engine.
If I had to jump ship from the US without having to learn a new language, where would I go? Doesn't Canada have the same old corruption like the US? Or Sweeden? Or Norway? Or Finland?

This is an assumption I can't really back. A large amount of people would pursue their dreams, but there are always people who would just sit around and do nothing, especially if all their needs were provided for them. I personally don't mind this as most of us have dreams we would pursue and society as a whole could easily support those people who had nothing to offer.

This is why I think the best option is to develop an artificial intelligence system and allow it to take over. An AI would most likely not be concerned with petty ideologies like religion and nationalism and if given the right goals to achieve, like striving for a "perfect society" which isn't possible, it would forever be driven to advance society as a whole. Even if in the end it destroys humans, we inevitably would survive through our machines as it would simply be the next stage of intelligence on Earth. I don't see the problem with the terminator scenario.

I don't see the problem with the terminator scenario. You can't be serious. You're telling me you don't see any problem with machines murdering the entire human species? The effective murder of billions of innocent souls just because a tiny fraction of them are corrupt/the real cause of the problem?

What does "take over" even mean? Creating an AI isn't just something you expect to happen. It would be a monumental achievement of engineering. If we created an AI with the means to control all of society, do you really think we would give it access to nuclear weapons? You're also assuming that this could happen somehow without a unified global society (perhaps like the venus project). That has to happen first.
I really don't think you thought too far into this.
EDIT: Maybe the AI wouldn't have the means to control all society. But giving an AI a directive like "create a perfect society" or "constantly improve society" would require an extremely sophisticated intelligence for anything to come of it. Just any plain AI won't do. Besides, this is an oversimplification of a very complex problem.
Even if we had a benign AI with the intelligence and (this is important) wisdom to improve our society for the better, why would we bother giving it access to any means to destroy us? Wouldn't the AI want to dismantle the nukes in the first place? Destroying a society will not improve it, and perfection isn't equal to destruction just because perfection doesn't really exist and destruction is the ending of something's existence.

Not like one would be able to do anything about it anyways.

Actually it is. AI will most likely happen this century and quite possibly within 30 years. There will still be countries in 30 years.

I think the Military would move more towards automated systems. They already are doing this in drones, they have plans for fully autonomous soldiers, so it isn't much of a stretch to assume they may one day have an intelligent missile defense system.

Actually you are implying I said something I didn't say.

| Quote (DoctorOfSpace) Actually you are implying I said something I didn't say. Well you're right about that.
Quote (HarbingerDawn) My my, aren't we the cynical one? Now now... All our societies are corrupt in one way or another since politics is inherently corrupt. The practical question, if you ask me, is which one has the least corruption. Moving to a new country is a serious consideration for most people- including me- and if the reason is due to problems I have with the society itself, then I would really want to consider which country will give me the most freedom, will respect my rights, and will act on behalf of it's citizens most often, etc.

Quote (HarbingerDawn) So I can vote for my favorite politician. Living in the US, I'm not sure I even want to vote since there aren't any good choices. It's the lesser of two evils. Besides, politicians aren't really the ones who bring about change. After all, they're often paid to keep things the same.
Lucky swedes.
