| Quote (Solaris) What is the next step for the Grasshopper?
Quote In March 2013, SpaceX announced that, beginning with the first flight of the stretch version of the Falcon 9 launch vehicle—the sixth flight overall of Falcon 9, currently scheduled for June 2013—every first stage would be instrumented and equipped as a controlled descent test vehicle. SpaceX intends to do propulsive-return over-water tests and "will continue doing such tests until they can do a return to the launch site and a powered landing. ... [They] expect several failures before they 'learn how to do it right.'"[24] For the early-summer 2013 flight, after stage separation, the first stage booster will do a burn to slow it down and then a second burn just before it reaches the water. When all of the over-water testing is complete, they intend to fly back to the launch site and land propulsively, perhaps as early as mid-2014.[24]

| That doesn't explain what they intend to do with Grasshopper. As far as I know they have never explicitly stated that they're stopping their Grasshopper test program due to trying actual tests with the F9, so the question of what's next for Grasshopper remains open.
I think the answer is that nobody knows, SpaceX has been pretty tight-lipped about Grasshopper testing and usually doesn't say much until something has already happened.

| Virgin Galactic (finally) completed the first powered flight of SpaceShipTwo! Yahoo, look at that thing, it's not just a space ship, it's a work of art!
SS2 went supersonic during the 16-second powered phase of flight, reaching a top speed of mach 1.2.
Some footage of the flight:

| Beautiful. (Looks like it might not pass European emission standards.)
But when will passengers be allowed on board? It's been "next year" for how many years?
KLM recently had a competition with a ticket as the prize, btw. All you had to do was to guess the 3D location of where a weather balloon would rupture. The winner was 15 km away. My guess was 63 km away.
