| Famed private spaceflight participant Dennis Tito announced today a daring plan for a crewed flyby mission to Mars in 2018. The mission plan calls for the launch of a spacecraft on a Falcon Heavy rocket in January of 2018 for a ~500 day mission to fly by Mars and return to Earth. The plan calls for a crew of two, one man and one woman. A Bigelow-type hab module would be docked to the front of the spacecraft and inflated in Earth orbit.
The mission would launch in January 2018, fly by Mars in August, and return to Earth in May 2019. The planetary alignment at this time would allow for a rapid free-return trajectory; the only major maneuver needed for the mission would be the trans-Mars injection burn when leaving Earth orbit. All other maneuvers would be minor course corrections only.
The closest approach to Mars during the flyby would be about 160 km. The spacecraft will not enter the atmosphere.

Millionaire Dennis Tito is preparing a manned Mars mission for 2018 (not a landing mission, just a manned fly-by).
I wonder if he will get the $2billion he needs to fund it.
Technically, it doesn't seem that far-fetched: it doesn't include landing (which would make the mission MUCH more difficult and expensive), and in terms of delta-v the cost of reaching Mars for a fly-by is lower than a Moon landing. The difficult part would be to keep the crew healthy during the 500 days of the trip.

I think having it ready for 2018 is a bit too optimistic, even if the funding was there, but for 2031 (the next launch window for the intended orbit) it doesn't sound that unrealistic.
What do you think? Do you see any chance of this being successful?

| Same here. I am hopeful that we will one day send humans to Mars, but I don't think this will be the mission to do it.

What did it for me was a quote I picked up somewhere along the lines of:
"We didn't reinvent the wheel or anything, we figured the technologies we need have already been developed and we just need to put them together."
It made me feel a bit...

I don't think that they'd care very much. Same story happened with Apollo 8.

I think that it can be done, but it would certainly be the most difficult mission ever undertaken from a crew standpoint. But I don't see any obvious reason that it should be considered impossible or very likely to fail (though I would agree that if it happens failure is a pretty strong possibility).

Actually there would have to be methods in place to prevent this case. Pregnancy on that mission would almost certainly result in the catastrophic failure of the mission. The craft will be designed to the limits of what the life support systems and provisions can support, and this will just barely support two people. A third person would be more than the mission's systems/supplies can support, not to mention that there would be a lack of proper medical facilities to deal with the likely problems associated with that.
