| The recent discussion in the science q&a reminded me of a project I did almost 9 years ago building an alpha decay detector for logging radon levels at home. It's still working, and if I plot the 3 month mean I get:
It looks like there are seasonal variations. There is a dip in the summer, which is no surprise since summer means more open windows and doors. There also is a peak in the autumns. I think the cause is more precipitation which somehow causes more release of radon from the ground.
I've written more about that project on this page. I was particularly to discover that my $250 detector performed as well as a commercial $5000 detector.

| midtskogen, cool! so the radiation is actually the alpha+beta decay of atoms? and radioactive elements mean they are not stable so they have faster decays, mean more radiation (energy) is that correct?

| Antza2, I still envy that macro lens.
Watsisname, those are some great images.

| Thanks, Doc.
spacer, Yep, they are the Cascades. The second image is looking towards Mount Rainier, which itself looks like a big cloud on the horizon.
midtskogen, that's an awesome project! The data look amazingly clean, and it's interesting to see the variability due to ventilation, and snow cover! I'm really curious about what's going on between precipitation rate and radiation count.

| Here's an old plot comparing radiation and precipitation (mm per day):
It's clearly correlated, and a more accurate sensor and a better setup than in my attic would probably improve the accuracy. I have found one paper describing the phenomenon but I have only been able to read the abstract: Monitoring precipitation rates using γ rays from adsorbed radon progeny as tracers

| Dang, I wish I still had my uni access to journals right now. This is really cool -- they're saying that the counts are not only correlated to precipitation rate, but that the proportionality even depends on whether it is rain or snow, and even the type of snow crystal! Which makes sense for particles being adsorbed onto surfaces of varying shape.

| I don't understand why researches put up with the anti-science of scientific journals. Scientific papers shouldn't be hidden behind paywalls of journals which no longer serve a purpose (distribution). They should be published online by the universities or whatever affiliation of the researchers.
Anyway, this looks like the same paper more or less: Monitoring precipitation and lightning cua changes in atmospheric gamma radiation

| Okay. . . . Why not?
I was a free lance illustrator the latter part of the 1980s and throughout the 1990s. (Yes, I'm ancient.) I suppose I am an illustrator still, but I'm kind of old school, before computer graphics were widely available. I'm also more gainfully employed at a day job now and don't have the time for my best work any more. Maybe when I retire . . .
As you can see I worked for widely different markets from NASA to TSR games -- mostly black and white stuff for games though. I *really* miss it!
(Sorry for the huge last picture. I had no idea it would post like that. It's much smaller on Facebook.)
