| The recent discussion in the science q&a reminded me of a project I did almost 9 years ago building an alpha decay detector for logging radon levels at home. It's still working, and if I plot the 3 month mean I get:
It looks like there are seasonal variations. There is a dip in the summer, which is no surprise since summer means more open windows and doors. There also is a peak in the autumns. I think the cause is more precipitation which somehow causes more release of radon from the ground.
I've written more about that project on this page. I was particularly to discover that my $250 detector performed as well as a commercial $5000 detector.

and radioactive elements mean they are not stable so they have faster decays, mean more radiation (energy)
is that correct?

spacer, Yep, they are the Cascades. The second image is looking towards Mount Rainier, which itself looks like a big cloud on the horizon.
midtskogen, that's an awesome project! The data look amazingly clean, and it's interesting to see the variability due to ventilation, and snow cover! I'm really curious about what's going on between precipitation rate and radiation count.

| Here's an old plot comparing radiation and precipitation (mm per day):
It's clearly correlated, and a more accurate sensor and a better setup than in my attic would probably improve the accuracy. I have found one paper describing the phenomenon but I have only been able to read the abstract: Monitoring precipitation rates using γ rays from adsorbed radon progeny as tracers

| Dang, I wish I still had my uni access to journals right now. This is really cool -- they're saying that the counts are not only correlated to precipitation rate, but that the proportionality even depends on whether it is rain or snow, and even the type of snow crystal! Which makes sense for particles being adsorbed onto surfaces of varying shape.
