Please, I've been 10 meters from a lightning strike before, it's no big deal 
But yeah, generally being that close doesn't work out too well, so most of the time I'd side with you guys.

| Saw the Green Flash today at sunset, over Bellingham Bay, WA. Fourth time I've seen one (and the weakest of the four by far), but I'm happy because it's the first time I've ever captured one on camera. 
Canon Powershot 300HS through an 80mm Meade spotting scope. It's actually a stillframe from video, but my internet connection is horrible out here so no video uploading for now.

Hard to tell. It might just be overexposure. But I like the way the surrounding trees are illuminated. I was recording at 3 fps. I don't know the exposure time (obviously less than 1/3"), but it was two hours after sunrise and not very dark, so around 1/100" seems plausible or a bit longer. Since both cameras caught it and they're not synchronised, the light must have lasted much longer, but the lightning is only visible in one single frame. There's not even a hint of anything glowing in the following frame. So I don't think it was a very powerful lightning. I can't tell for sure if it hit a tree and in that case which one. I haven't been down there and checked. It hit a golf course, so I sent the pictures to the guy in charge of maintaining the course.

This was 1 km away. As long as I'm indoors, I'm not worried about myself. I worry more about property that can catch fire and my electronics. I have plenty of surge protectors, I've isolated my internet connection with fiber, the logger that has wires out of the house to sensors is on wifi, and everything critical is on an online UPS with plenty of battery (I stacked up 6 car batteries so I can pull the plug and still have 500W of computers running for much of the day), which should reduce the risks somewhat, or possibly just shift it. Little can endure a direct hit, and the field around a lightning very close by can affect electronics almost no matter how well everything is isolated, so all these protective measures might also mean that there are more things that can blow up.
I have a lightning rod as well, which is kind of a double edged thing. I don't really want to attract the lightning, but if it hits close, it's better to have it hit the rod rather than the house. So the effect probably is that I've increased the probability of frying all my electronics by actually attracting lightning close to it, but reduced the risk of the house burning down. A fair trade-off, though.
I beat you on 10 meters anyway. I was on the DART in Dublin (the local train) and the train was about to leave the platform when a lightning hit a pole. I was inside the train and saw the pole on the safe side of the window. The pole was 3-4 meters away. There were a few people on the platform. I don't know what happened to them since the train left. I think the pole pretty much completely took the hit, but they surely must have felt a pretty hard blow. I was glad this wasn't where I was going off.
I've had a couple of bad experiences with lightning costing me a lot of repair work, like this lightning which hit a tree on the property of a neighbour of mine causing massive damage there and ~$5000 of damage here (insurance mostly covered it, but it was obviously much work for me). I had been outside photographing the lightnings in the distance, but they were approaching and I got a bad feeling and went inside. Just when I went through the door, it hit. First the enormous flash and instant blast, then a sizzling sound coming from the walls inside house.

Yeah. The last one is definitely my best work. Originally i didn't even plan on making a time lapse of that night, but after taking photos of the aurora for a couple of hours and the aurora seemed to be calming down, i just left the camera outside to take pictures just in case something interesting would happen later.
