a very long time before your map starts

That map covers back to around 400-500 million years ago so yeah not very far back on the larger Earth time scales.

Quote (HarbingerDawn)
I know that it did not harm the development of life in general, but I just wonder what smaller effects it could have had

Well not much really. Most life during the extreme proximity of the Moon was microbial and living in the Ocean. They wouldn't really be affected besides the movement of the tides.

Quote (HarbingerDawn)
or what might have happened differently if the Moon had formed at its present distance

We wouldn't be here talking about this if that were the case. I've read about a few contradicting points on the Moons future, some say we will lose it in a couple billion years, others say the Earth's rotation will slow down and become tidally locked with the Moon.

Just idle thoughts, nothing Earth-shattering (unlike the collision with Thea, ba-ZING!)

I was thinking that since the tides would make the ocean cover much of the land, then many surface photosynthesizing organisms might be deposited ashore, affecting their population density in near-coastal regions. Things like that.

From what I understand, the Moon will keep moving away from Earth, but it probably would not get far enough away to escape until the Earth was dead anyway. And the Earth's rotation will keep slowing down, but again it could not become tidally locked before the death of the Sun. We are nearly half way to the end of Sol on the main sequence, and the Earth's rotation has only been slowed by about 18 hours or so. And the tidal effect will get weaker as the Earth's rotation continues to slow and as the Moon moves farther away.

Nor have I. The Sun is a fascinating, awe inspiring, and mind-bogglingly complex place. And Vangelis can make anything spacy seem wonderful cool

The Earth only has around 500 million years left to support life. Around that time the sun will expand just enough to turn the Earth into a desert wasteland more or less. After that it only gets worse as the sun expands more and the Earth over heats. Around that time it would be best if humanities descendants aren't in this area of Sol anymore.

Apparently its possible for the Moon to stop and get pulled back a bit closer and then the Earth and the Moon become tidally locked to each other. Too bad that won't happen for a long time, or maybe thats a good thing.

When you've been on the net as long as I have you tend to see more than you would ever bargain for.

Just take my advice. Never get yourself into the demented world of Finnish memes. You will not survive. biggrin

Probably a reason why the aliens won't outright talk to us. They don't wanna hear about our mythological stories.
