Although they say genetic engineering. Your post made me think of a bunch of Roswell greys turning on some smoother jazz and getting it on with some hairy, small skulled, hunched back, primitive humans.

If there was no Moon we wouldn't be here to talk about it. More than likely the Earth would have an unstable rotation and wild temperature fluctuations on the surface. And as most people here know all too well, space is big and uncommon things tend to happen all the time.

So it seems the Moons existence is something to be expected if you live on a planet like Earth.

That sounds rather like the anthropic principle.

In any case, we do know that collisions like the one we think formed the Moon are actually fairly common by studying other nascent planetary systems. The collision easily explains the lighter density of the Moon, as well as its orbit. Aside from its relatively low density, and its large size compared to Earth versus other planet/satellite systems, there isn't anything terribly special about the Moon.

It doesn't make us special it simply says we wouldn't find ourselves here if the conditions for us being here weren't here.

Plus computer simulations of all the different ideas behind the Moon support the collision model overall the rest.

The moon is vitally important for the current life on Earth

it doesn't give any explanations for why things are they way they are, only why they aren't any way else.

I wonder if this aided or hindered the development of life, or if it made no real difference.

Even a partial answer is still helpful in understanding something further.

When the Moon first formed and was working itself into a stable orbital trajectory I suspect it was quite chaotic. Most likely I'd guess life did not exist at the time of collision.
