| Im pretty sure all, if not most of you have heard of the game Infinity. For those of you who don't know it's a game which, like SpaceEngine, puts you in a proceduraly generated universe and lets you do the exploration. The genre of the game is planned to be pretty much MMO based and it runs on the newly developed I-Novae Engine by I-Novae Studios.
As far as i know it probably wont give the option of exploring the whole known and unknown universe and the storyline of the game will be focused around finding the location of Earth. But i wont get into the gamplay details. Now the developers mentioned that they've seen SpaceEngine and their opinion on it was:
Quote Well their planetary engine is less advanced than ours, and technically it looks like they're using pretty much the same algorithms, so it's like watching an old version of Infinity. They're definitely on the right tracks.
They're far more advanced on the "space" part though: gas giants, rendering of stars, navigating in the galaxy, etc.. in Infinity I've had all of those in independent tests, not yet integrated.
Infinity doesnt count on the realism and accuracy in the universe but rather more focused on the gameplay aspect of their game. But their planets seem to have a really high detailed textures and another interesting thing was the volumetrix nebulas which also are very detailed. They've done a great job with the ring systems of planets where not only a mist-like ring exsists but also proceduraly generated asteroids.
I dont wanna make this some kind of war between the two or say which is better. Just wanna hear other people's opinions and thoughts about it. Especially SpaceEngineer's. ^^
Vladimir have you contacted or talked with anyone from the developers of I-Novae Studios? Anything that could be shared between the two engines or anything else interesting that you've came across?
My own opinion is like this: SpaceEngine has the universe Infinity has the gameplay. ^^

| I have done a search on their forums using the words: "space engine". Look at their results: http://www.infinity-universe.com/Infinit....search2 actually it doesn't work via link from here - it appears you have to do the search manually - sorry They know about space engine and I also suggested to them, to colaborate with space engineer but they are on completely diffrent tracks in the development phase. I think they are developing infinity on direct 3d technology whereas Space Engineer is developing SE in OpenGL. I am not going into details as to which platform is better because: 1st: I don't have a clue 2nd: There is no point because both engines look fantastic to me
It is with no doubt that both projects are immensly huge and require great effort from the developers. It would be interesting to see both teams (actually space engineer is working alone AFAIK ) discussing their projects together in a discussion board but I don't think it is going to happen - I think it is not realistically possible.
I once questioned in their forum, their choice to only include our galaxy in their game. There answer is perfectly rational: With 200+ billion star systems in our galaxy, even if you visit 1 system every second, you will die before you manage to visit them all . This doesn't mean that Space Engine with thousands of galaxies is bad idea or unecessarily huge. It's just an even more realistic depiction of our universe - and a networking challenge: multiple galaxies - multiple servers. Every galaxy a universe of its own . One day you can choose to play on the milky way server (or cluster of servers if one galaxy can't fit into one server ). The other day you log into the Andromeda server - the chioise is yours.
Anyway I am anxiously awaiting for both projects to evolve. There is something to look forward to in our daily routine lifes - a star to escape - a star cluster to discover. Infinity meets Eternity - a name for Space Engine once it evolves into a hyper-super-duperrmassive MMO

| Definitely its impossible to explore everything. And I agree both projects are absolutely amazing and worth wating for. I like the Eternity idea for SpaceEngine's name. It really is the most accurate name for it cuz lets face it even as an engine we cant really explore all of it lol its gigantic.
Im guessing using DirectX is more complicated then using OpenGL. I-Novae have a whole company and look how far they've went and Vladimir is a single person and he recreated the universe alone sort to speak lol

| Ah yes I remember Infinity, that tech demo is truly amazing, I just completely gave up on them though when the guy didn't want to add a really basic test version or demo (I did play the multiplayer demo though, that was really cool, but i wanted planets!) And they aren't developing very fast at all, compared to Space Engineer.
Then I found Space Engine, which Is exactly what I wanted from Infinity, I remember seeing the Infinity videos on youtube where they showed a rendering of an entire galaxy and you could visit the stars and they would all be procedurally generated, I just wanted to explore that, and Space Engine gave me exactly that.

| I absolutely agree with you Talisman. Infinity was the first of its kind to be so massive and detailed. After seeing it i knew exactly what i was looking for and a of course SpaceEngine poped up. I played the combat demo too and i thought it was fun but there's still more improvement that can be done.
Keith Newton, one of the I-Novae developers mentioned that they are really working hard on the engine and their priority was to make the engine more stable and complete before doing more in-debth work on the game itself.

| I have been following Infinity for years and years and it becomes more apparent each month that it is likely it will never be released publicly. It's quickly on the road to vaporware....

I can't say too much about Infinity - I only see their video and read the blog and play the ICP. Their engine is more graphically advanced - it has more detailed landscape, shadows, god rays, deferred shading, some physics. But I can inplement all these features within one year too. The most important difference: Is they have a network.

Maybe Abyss is a more appropriate name for a game?

Well Abyss would be more appropriate for something that involves huge amounts of water like in an ocean bed IMO. It reminds me of James Cameron's movie "Abyss" which was maybe better than "Avatar" (IMO).
If Infinity project becomes a vaporware, then the name "Infinity" could be used for SE with no copyright violations . Because let's face it: Space Engine IS virtually infinite just like the real universe! So infinity would totally describe it. "Eternity" or "Space Eternity" could be used as alternatives. But of course Space Engineer will decide on the name - we can only offer our suggestions

| And when you think about it SpaceEngine really does come close to infinity because when you travel out of the galactic clusters and the whole known universe it just keeps going tho its just black it keeps going out. Now thats vast.

| "If" it ever gets released then great, but it looks like vaporware. Development taking way too long, no estimates on a release date or even a demo and MMO? good luck. Best to just release it as SP and be realistic with goals.

Yeah hopefuly. Cant enjoy them after the end of the world lol But anyway, i was curious Infinity staff mentioned that they will implement life and civilizations with different types of technology. Can we expect that in SpaceEngine or is it better to leave things like that in the MOD section?

| SpaceEngine has already satisfied my thirst, which the Infinity engine has already failed to deliver IMO. And even when (or if) Infinity gets released, how is it going to satisfy my thirst then? SE has already sated me NOW: And what is this thing I desired to do for so many years, that Infinity cannot fulfill in me now?! -- Besides the obvious of travelling though an infinite procedural and seemless universe, it has also been able to simulate travelling at amazing speeds through space, and to know what it feels like to travel at those speeds, albeit it is only in the virtual sense, but let's be honest here: We are never going to come close to knowing what it feels like to travel at those kinds of speeds in real life, or even for generations to come for that matter.
I had always wondered for years what it would be like to travel at amazing speeds: At 10, 50, 100, 1000 Ly/sec. Now I get to know!

| In my opinion SE give you the visual satisfaction of space travel at these amazing speeds. As we all know there is nothing that can travel faster then the speed of light. And even at that speed for a person to experience it, you would need some kind of space craft which is:
1 - Able to reach the speed of light 2 - Have the structural integrity to withstand the speed 3 - Have inertial dampners which will obviously keep a person from being crushed from the force
And if we are talking bout even faster then that we can include an engine system with implemented FTL drive or Hyperspace drive assuming subspace does exsist. But im pretty sure you've seen a lot of movies and tv series that pretty much explain all that

| I wonder if you can travel at .99c so that version 1.0 can come out quicker.
