Ah, I must confess that I didn't bother to translate the article.

What makes the S more attractive to Norwegians, then? Simple sex appeal and reliability?

Because they're superior to other cars, why else? tongue I mean, if you could get a Tesla for the same price as some other car, which one would you get?

I think for most it's a matter of getting a pretty cool car for the price of a regular one. If you can afford a new car from the factory, and Model S serves your needs, the choice is pretty obvious. Also add that fuel is available for free many places, public parking is free, you can drive in the taxi/bus lane and road toll is free. These latter benefits will no doubt soon mostly disappear as the percentage of electric cars on the roads rises, but I don't think these are decisive for Model S buyers anyway. I don't think Tesla has a reliability record better than other brands, but their customer service is at least reported to be outstanding.

In Norwegian cities it makes much sense to have a high percentage of electric cars because of frequent temperature inversions in winter leading to very polluted air (inversion prevents air from being circulated). The CO2 driven shift from petrol to diesel has been a step backwards pollution wise.

The most sold car in Norway in January was the Nissan Leaf (followed by Toyota Auris and VW Golf). About 10% of the cars are electric.

ADDED: Guess how you're supposed to bring your skis (use Google translate). An article on Model X published today, highlighting precisely the problem Model X will have in Norway, which I recently mentioned. Elon Musk visited Oslo last week and according to the article when asked about the doors and skis, his reply was that the doors look cool so they will definitely not change and the skis can be stuffed away under the seats. I don't know, stuff several few pairs of 220 cm long flat sticks under the seats?? I wonder if he tells the Californians the same thing when they ask how to bring the surf board. I'm not sure if the doors actually look cool either, but perhaps some do. Anyway, it's the impractical aspect that excludes the Norwegian market.

Cool, thanks for the answer.

HD, of course I realise how cool they are! I just meant in relation to the X. I wasn't asking about Tesla vs Other Cars, I was asking about S vs X. Sorry if that was unclear (or if I'm taking you too seriously :p).

Now I understand that the X is a car with a more specified function than the S, and that it has a few flaws that specifically hold it back from fulfilling that function, making the S more attractive as an all-rounder.

It seems Musk doesn't like skiers, surfers, or short people... gullwing doors are pretty crazy - I can't decide whether I like them or not...

Obviously, the primary reason why people are currently preferring Model S over Model X is that Model S is available and Model X is not.

I agree they are an amazing automobile. It is probably the first electric car I have ever driven that could make the case as a replacement for a petrol car for the average American driver. Talking to a Tesla rep earlier this weekend the projections for the car include by 2020, 450 miles range and 15 min charging through a 500KW supercharger upgrade. Along with entry level models starting at $30,000. The Model S right now actually makes a good alternative to a similarly priced BMW M5 and E63 AMG in terms of price, performance and equipment.

As for the fires....Lithium Batteries are flammable. However due to the design of the vehicle, it takes the same kind of damage that would set off a fire in a Gasoline vehicle (puncturing a fuel tank under the car). But in the case of the Model S, the battery packs are isolated by an aluminum space frame that would resist a fire more than long enough for occupants to escape unlike a gasoline explosion. Also the relative simplicity and low mechanical complexity of the vehicle (1/4 the moving parts as a typical car) actually contributes to a car that is unlikely to have many mechanical failures in the future.

Or maybe I am just biased because I am going to work for a company owned by Elon Musk :P

Oooooh, wow. I'd be jealous of you, but I've heard conflicting reports on how satisfying it is to work for him.

Nah, screw it - you're working toward the future, where most people work towards the profit margin. I'm jealous.

Well it would be working for a better future but profit is a motive too. There is nothing wrong with that...we do live in a capitalist system. At least I do....:)

A lot of companies like GE, IBM and others were cutting edge in the past. Now they just maintain upgrading and recycling past ideas that were successful for them. Honestly these new capitalists like Musk are really guys who wish to harken back to time when America was the tech leader, and I say...go for it! I don't agree with his government grants (corporatism is disease) but what I have seen this weekend during my tour we will be Mars bound and beyond shortly.

What type of economic system you live in has no bearing on what is right and what is wrong, so I have to fault you for that logic. That said, profit is obviously a necessity, but what you do with that profit is what's important. If the money is an end unto itself, then that's not ok. If you use the profit in some way to benefit the future of humanity, then that's great. For example, Elon uses the profits that he and his companies generate to further the development of their technologies and expand their production and staffing so they can do the previously impossible: make practical, high-quality electric vehicles commonplace, and to make reusable space launch vehicles and transportation systems capable of carrying people to and from Mars for the purposes of starting a colony. That's wonderful stuff. Does the CEO of Apple, with his $378 million in compensation, do the same?

Which government grants are you talking about?

I'm pretty sure the universe would implode.

"The results of which could cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space-time continuum and destroy the entire universe!... Granted, that's the worst-case scenario. The destruction however might be limited merely to our own galaxy."

Tesla has been ordered to shut down its stores in New Jersey thanks to the oh-so-wonderful-and-wise government there deciding to side with the auto dealers, even after Tesla had been issued a license to operate. A capitalist economy that stifles competition and innovation and supports monopolies is the worst kind of capitalism. It undermines its strengths and enhances its shortcomings. 'Murrka.
