| Tesla's statement doesn't answer everything, in particular why it looks like the driver has filled the front trunk with petrol. It immediately made me wonder if the driver had shorted Tesla stocks. The stock has risen 400% or so this year, so there is a gain potential here quickly surpassing the value of a new Model S.  I see that I was not the only one having that thought.
If it's the car itself that is burning, I think Tesla has a bit of explaining to do. The car doesn't come with a fire department and you'd be in trouble with a fire like that regardless of how fast it can enter the interior cabin if the fire happens in a tunnel (not to mention the safety of other drivers).

| Newspapers in Norway report that the second hand value of Tesla Model S is 10-20% higher than the price Tesla is asking. This is due to the high demand and delivery time, and of course the extreme tax penalty for other similarly performing cars.

| Interesting thing. In my country, there is a tax on cars, based on volume of the engine (something like ~$100 for 1500 cm3). So for electric car it will be $0?

| Tesla announced that it will offer free custom tuning for high-speed driving to German Model S owners (and probably all of Europe). Among other things, this will enable the car to exceed its electronically-limited top speed of 210 km/h. They also aim to have all of Germany covered by the Supercharger network by the end of next year. European Superchargers and Model S cars will be capable of charging at 135 kW, compared to the 120 kW of Superchargers in the USA.

Considering the base cost of a Model S, that tax wouldn't make much difference relatively.
In Norway, however, the tax is based on weight, emissions (CO2, NOx) and engine power, but (fully) electric cars are exempted. If Model S was not an electric car, the engine power would cost you $75,000 in taxes and for the weight you would have to pay $35,000. And the emission tax would probably set you back another $20,000. In all something in the order of $130,000. Of course, very few can afford that or are willing to pay that even if they could.
It means that you can buy a Model S at a 2/3 rebate if the 310 kW power is what you care about, not the range or source of energy. But for most people 100 kW is sufficient. That puts the Model S in the price range of regular modestly equipped SUV's or family cars. And for the time being electric cars have access to bus lanes and have free parking. Environmentally these advantages probably have been bad environmentally, since it's a great incentive for people to get a second car for commuting which they otherwise wouldn't have bought, but perhaps Tesla with the longer range of their cars can make electric cars an option as a primary and only car for families.

The limelight effect. While I can see how a damage can cause a high enough current to start a fire with these batteries, it seems a bit odd that the car has that flammable parts.

| He has some good points, but uses bad math in his reasoning:

He can't directly compare one gasoline fire per 1350 cars in one year with 3 Model S fires in 19,000 cars in Q3. Proper integration would make the number of fires almost comparable, but 3 incidents aren't enough to produce strong statistics anyway.

He didn't. He was commenting on the number of gasoline car fines per total number of gasoline cars vs. the number of Model S fires per total number of Model S cars. His mention of Q3 is simply a reference to the latest statistic of how many TOTAL Model S cars were in use, not a statement that all statistics about the Model S were limited to Q3 data only. He clearly stated in other places that he was comparing Model S and gasoline cars using the same criteria and same time spans.

The trouble is that the total number of Model S cars has obviously increased a lot more than the total number of gasoline cars over the past year. The mean number of Model S cars on the road over the past year is well below 19,000.
