| Quote HarbingerDawn ( ) One Norwegian Tesla owner's account of his experience using the Model S in Norway's winter That was quick. They must have rushed to make that movie once the snow began to fall in the last few weeks...
At 2:57 he just drove past by my workplace.
I'm sure it's as good as pretty much everything else to drive on snow. If there are problems, my guess would be that some cool but not really important gadgets working fine near the Californian coast become annoyances, such as the car handle freezing up or whatever.
Tesla Norway was in the news over here a couple a days ago. Apparently they're failing to pay their bills and have earned themselves a bad credit rating. Which seems unneccesary, since their sales here are limited by production not demand. While driving home yesterday it struck me how fast one brand has become so common after passing four Model S cars in less than a minute. In a few months they've begun to make up a significant %-age of the cars on the road, at least here in commuter hubs around Oslo.

| Quote midtskogen ( ) Battery swap critical story posted at WUWT. I myself have always been a little skeptical of the whole battery pack swap thing; if they really were demoing working tech that they planned to implement in the near future, they should have shown what was going on. Instead, the entire process was invisible, and we have only their word that they actually did what they said. On the flip side, however, I have found Elon Musk to be a generally trustworthy guy, so I'm also quite skeptical that he or his company would simply perpetrate a blatant deception.
I agree that there are legitimate issues there, and he makes some good points, but ultimately his assertion that the battery pack swap was a "hoax" seems unjustified and sensationalistic. However, citing "fraud" is considerably more defensible, as getting credit for a technology that is not in use and is not going to be available in the immediate future is a bit ridiculous.

| So their demo was a stretch, pushing it as far as they think they can get away with. Companies do it all the time.

| Quote midtskogen ( ) Companies do it all the time. Of course they do. But not all companies are the same as each other, just as all people aren't the same. That doesn't mean I disagree with your conclusion, just your generalization (and not even with the content of the generalization, just the generalization itself).

| Quote midtskogen ( ) Stretchla Cool project! It's interesting to see someone working on a Tesla that extensively, doubly so given that there's so little reference material, making it quite the adventure

| Tesla Model S P85 beats four other electric cars in winter test. Model S crushed the other cars on range: 206.9 km vs 58.9 - 69.1 km for the others. About average for breaking length, which is fairly impressive considering its weight.
Added (20.01.2014, 09:28) --------------------------------------------- Apparently there is a charging problem for Model S in low temperatures. The article isn't very clear about the extent of the problem and it has an odd statement about it being a problem limited to Norway because the power grid in Norway isn't grounded, which is nonsense, but it's true that many outlets in Norwegian homes are not grounded, it was only a requirement in kitchens and bathrooms (since 1998 all outlets are grounded). So regardless of Tesla's problems I would called an electrician if I were charging a Model S from a ungrounded outlet to fix the grounding, which is a good idea anyway.
EDIT: The problem seems to be the communication between the car and the charger and the cable used in Norway which is different. It's grounding related, but really because of a "lack" of grounding. Rather, Norway has an IT (insulated terra) grid opposed to TN (terra neutral) most other places. In Norway only 230V is available (230V between the phases as well) within a home, not 400V. This makes data signalling over the power cable more prone to noise. I'm not sure why this is greater problem in cold weather. Perhaps the extra load due to heating is adding to the noise rather than low temperature/absolute humidity/whatever.

| Quote Destructor1701 ( ) I suspect their Money:Sense ratio needs re-tooling. Well, the article says that they let their children and grandchildren use them. Because of the tax situation Tesla cars cost the about same as moderately equipped diesel/petrol cars, and if you can afford buying cars for children and grandchildren, why not.
They've ordered a Model X. Four wheel drive will certainly spark some interest in Norway, but I suspect Model X will flop here because of one single design decision: the doors. The lack of a roof box or ski/bike rack option will be a total show-stopper for most who otherwise would consider it.
