| People in Italy, at least those who surprisingly take a glance at titles in papers not regarding soccer topics, are mostly grinning at the results so far of Exomars mission, if not openly angry for such waste of money.
I think ESA is very capable when releasing reports and news to media.
But nothing can be done in a social context where functional illiteracy is thriving at all levels.

e.g. in papers the average story was similar to this (snippets from ESA webpage):
"Schiaparelli, the ExoMars Entry, descent and landing Demonstrator Module (EDM):
[...] is a technology demonstration vehicle carried by the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO).
[...] will demonstrate the capability of ESA and European industry to perform a controlled landing on the surface of Mars. The preparation for this mission enhances Europe’s expertise and enables the testing of key technologies which could be used in subsequent missions to Mars.
[...] Although designed to demonstrate entry, descent and landing technologies, Schiaparelli also offers limited, but useful, science capabilities."
...which in that social context translate as: "We're landing to Mars. Whatever."
ESA definitely had its landing capability tested, and the results were "something's wrong".

For comparison the cost of the ISS for europe (for the whole mission) is 10.76€ per person, about 1€ per year.

| The guys at ESA has calculated the landing as 80% successful and the whole mission as 96% successful. The article giving these calculations is named "Spacecraft are tricky … and engineering is an art form", but "Spacecraft are tricky … and communication is an art form" would be more fitting. An art form which they don't master, and they don't even notice the giggling they cause, I think.

| I have a thing i want your opinion on. I'm designing this water extractor to be used on Mars and the basic idea right now is to drill through the regolith into a water deposit and collect the water vapor that is formed when the ice comes into contact with the martian atmosphere. The collector is going to have an umbrella-like cover over the borehole that funnels the vapor to the top of the structure and into a condenser. The problem right now is to stop water vapor from condensing into the structure itself. My solution to this is to cover the structure with some hydrophobic material to stop water molecules from touching it. Would this work in practice though? What do you think?

| Antza2, mmm for what i know about chimestry right now. you can use some type of carbons chains molecules that dont have OH or if they have it, you need chain of 5 carbons or above. because if you dont have OH the water molecules will not "want" to do hydrogen bonds or even do bonds at all with that material.
something i can think of is maybe Pentanol or hexane or Octane or any kind of Ether. in these molecules there is big chain of carbons.
wait for Watsisname, answer maybe he can talk about it more!!
in my examples, for pentanol there is OH meaning he can do hydrogen bond with the water but its weak compered the the hydrophobe carbons-hydrogens chain.
i hope i am right...i learned it in chimestry recently
but in mars temperature and pressure this may not working...my knowladge is limited right now
