Boldness, to think it is possible to figure out the answer. Determination, to proceed to do so, no matter how difficult it might seem! And curiosity again to take you further, in contemplating what you have just learned and find myriad new questions lying in wait.

IMO the golden disk with pulsar bearings and periods are probably the best way to say something to an alien civilization, better than pictures and symbols - if you want to speak with math, you'd want to speak in the best and purest math you can possibly do. The receivers of this message would probably sift this info through their databases with different amount of tolerance and discover several instances of correlation, most of them are completely irrelevant towards interstellar origin of the probe, so maybe they will be able to select the correct answer.
Human language is irrelevant. Human names are irrelevant. Sounds and images are probably less so, because they actually contain a lot of information redundancy. Pure math is probably relevant, even though it is omnipresent out there - probably it can tell them how advanced you were. The form of information is the most problematic thing - it should be encoded in digital matter, but in the way it would be interpreted the right way, which also means it has to be organized in hierarchical manner. The movie Contact provides an example of such thing(although I recognize it as a very primitive one) - in this case though, humans receive alien message.
Practically, if you want to send aliens a complete picture and meaning of your civilization and it's contents, you'd have to send most of your educational database, if not the complete snapshot of the Google Cache in the amount of petabytes (which is probably by many orders of magnitude less then actual size of the Net itself).
