Saber: somewhat cool looking, but useless; the guard blades' emitters project from the sides of the hilt, and are below the base of the main blade, so if you slid another saber down the length of the blade to the hilt it would just destroy it. The guards are utterly ineffective.

Background: My wife's been frustrated with people sending oddly formatted Office documents, which don't look good at all in Open Office. So finally I buy a laptop with Windows 8.1 and I buy Office Home & Student for it. Now I just have to install stuff and make the computer usable.
First problem: When I try to activate Office it asks for a Microsoft account. I haven't got one and I don't want one. It's not me who's going to use Office anyway. This computer will have everything it needs installed and will be fully disconnected from any "cloud", so, no thanks, no account.
So I go to the Microsoft website to get in touch with support who hopefully can tell me how this crap that I bought can be used. I search the website, but no e-mail address, no phone numbers, nothing. I'm just told to log into my Microsoft account to get support. Argh. I DON'T want one!
The last time I bought and used software from Microsoft (although bundled with the computer) was AmigaBASIC back in the 80's. The fall of Commodore coincided with the appearance of Linux around 1992/1993, so I naturally switched to Linux being an obvious choice. Windows was never option as an OS, since it didn't exist at that time. In 1992 Windows was not an OS, but a program running in DOS. So for me the world of Windows is a parallel universe I keep hearing about, but I've never lived there. In my world "to buy" means that you receive the goods in exchange for money, and that's the end of the buyer-seller interaction, as opposed to leasing. No accounts involved. I'm pretty sure that it said that I bought Office for use with one computer, not that I entered some leasing contract. I begin to wonder if a tradition, buying and selling, many thousand years old, suddenly ended in that parallel universe which appeared a couple of decades ago. And nobody said anything?
So still I'm set back $150 and only have a piece of paper with some letters and numbers on it and I haven't figured out how to make any use of them.
Next problem: I'm trying to copy some 53 GB of files to this computer over Wifi. It takes a few hours, so I just let the computer run and got back to it a few hours later. It has turned itself off. I power it on, and it spent half an hour booting up saying something about upgrade and don't turn off. When it finally boots, the transfer had not completed. I never told the computer to reboot! What if I was running something critical? Do people really accept an OS doing this? Anyway, I think I found a way to stop updates from being automatically installed and to stop reboots. So I start the file transfer from scratch again. Hours later I get back to the computer, and it's switched off again. ?! Now it boots up with any updates, but Wifi and the file transfer had been interrupted again. Do I have to press a key every 5 minutes or so to prevent Windows from shutting down by itself? Who wants a computer like this?? There's possibly a power setting somewhere, but the thing was shipped set up like this! It wasn't running on battery either.
I could probably go on. I don't get the thing with Windows 8. It's like someone at Microsoft suddenly discovered smartphones and thought that it was cool, so what works on a 3" screen is probably great on big screen computers as well, all the way to four 4K 50" monitors and beyond. It's ridiculous. Fortuneately it's possible to switch to something more desktop like, but what were they thinking? And speed. I got a laptop that I didn't expect to be slow. 3.5 GHz i7-4710HQ, 16GB memory, 512GB SSD, GTX 860M 2 GB. I'm pretty sure that things would be pretty snappy if I install Linux, but in this Windows 8 install things take time. What on earth is it doing all the time?
Some years ago I attended a course by Herb Sutter, an Microsoft insider, who talked a bit of stupidities of Windows 7, but also of how Windows 8 would be doing things fundamentally the correct way. Perhaps the Windows 8 core is fundamentally better. An OS done the proper way. It sounded convincing. But it seems that Microsoft has spared no expenses in trying to hide it from the user.

It looks like Windows 7, and it runs better than Windows 7. I never touch metro so I don't care about it, and I never really need to use the start button anyways. The only real issue I had with 8 is the built in Skype app begin terrible, and even then, I could just get the desktop version of it.

Every thing you mentioned as a problem is customizable and can be turned off or adjusted so it isn't a problem. Powering off automatically, going into sleep mode, and automatic updates are enabled by default nowadays because your average individual is exceptionally stupid and wouldn't do those things if they were manual.

For those of us who have been using Windows for 20 years, and have grown up with it and watched it evolve, we know all of these things that it does and how to deal with them. Basically, everything they've done over the past 15 years to make Windows more friendly to dumb people has made it more annoying for us, but fortunately most of it can be customized and you can turn off all the unwanted things.
Also, I put up with it by not using Windows 8. After Win 7, I'll either go to Win 10, or switch to Linux, we'll see. That decision is still a few years out I think.

Well, I haven't yet figured out how to customise how to activate legally bought software without an account, how to customise getting support from Microsoft without an account, and how to run things 10x faster, as allowed by the hardware.
The speed issue is not just this computer. I bought a netbook a while ago which came with Windows 8. At $300 it hasn't top specs. I wiped out Windows on the first day, but for fun I did boot it up into Windows 8 first. It was a pain to do anything. Programs took a long time to start. Even menus to seconds to appear. I then formatted the hard drive and installed Ubuntu and while it doesn't do heavy computational stuff or SE well, at least ordinary tasks happen pretty instant out of the box. Perhaps Windows is indexing the whole drive or something at first time use, I don't know, but even that doesn't quite explain the speed.
