| Quote (werdnaforever) Prime directive Close enough.
It seems to be a pattern when a full length movie is made of a TV series, the movie plot is more poorly written than the plot of an average TV episode. Perhaps it's a consequence of too much money being thrown at the movie. Low budget forces a better plot to compensate for the lack of money for visual effects.
Totally unrelated: One of my weather stations reported 8 mm rainfall (nearly a third of an inch for the unit impaired) in 5 minutes yesterday. Such intensities are rare in Norway.

| Quote Of the million ways this could plausibly happen, the story has a cold fusion bomb capable of instantly freezing all magma inside a massive volcano.
The new Star Trek films are insanely awful in the science department. Don't even get me started on the black hole physics from the first one... hngggg!
I did think they were both very entertaining films, but only as long as I could manage to continually divert power from the thinking part of my brain to the WHEEE EYECANDY part. :S

I had a look. I wish I was better at switching off the necessary parts of the brain. Apparently all of Scandinavia (including Denmark whose highest "peak" today is 171 masl) consisted of deep fjords 1200 years ago. Ok, scenery, clothing, relationships of historical persons are always rewritten and mixed freely. But why couldn't the rest be moderately believable? The rest was to me simply a continuous "no, they wouldn't say that, do that or think that". Argh.

| Quote (Watsisname) The new Star Trek films are insanely awful in the science department. Don't even get me started on the black hole physics from the first one... hngggg! You can say that again. Don't forget about cold fusion devices! And the enterprise doesn't warp anymore. It jumps, or something... and just what is that trail it leaves behind in Into Darkness? Are they ice crystals?
They've turned Star Trek into Star Wars. I'm not saying Star Wars is bad, but SW and ST are two different things. If anyone needs more proof, when the Enterprise goes into warp it looks just like in Star Wars as they fly through hyperspace. Also, I thought that blowing up Vulcan in 2009 was symbolic for what they did to ST. They quickly eliminated all the logic and reason.
And what's with this "destiny" BS? First there was all that stuff in 2009 about their destinies being altered. I said OK, fine, it's a time travel move. But then in Into Darkness Capt. Pike says to Kirk how "he altered the destiny of Nibiru". And later Spock "prime" says that he made a vow to never give them information that could potentially alter their destiny. Who's writing this stuff?
Ok I'm done.

| Quote (HarbingerDawn) No they haven't. JJ Trek is not comparable to Star Wars in any meaningful sense. Not literally... but they've turned it away from it's roots and into that direction... the action packed science fantasy genre. They've thrown all the science out the airlock and into space! Its all about the "characters" now. :P
EDIT:
I can't see anything. Did you not type anything or is it just my PC acting funny? Or did you post a youtube video?

| It's a picture of a carton of Ice Breaker mints. Because by extremely rigorous scientific analysis of the particles and associated sound effects in vacuum, I determined the Enterprise's warp drive in Into Darkness is powered by coolmint flavor crystals.
y'know, 'cause they're cool. And taste great with Big Red Matter Cinnamon balls.

| Quote (werdnaforever) They've thrown all the science out the airlock and into space! In all fairness, Star Trek has always been extremely loose with its science and has been known to break its own rules a time or ten. It was never about science with Trek, it was about a vision of the future, a reflection on the issues we face in our society today that also provided hope for tomorrow. And Star Wars is not about action, it's about storytelling and operatic drama; classic tales of good and evil, heroism and cowardice, triumph and defeat.
JJ Trek is not defined by either of the above. It's defined by special effects, absurd set design, absurdly conventional and over-the-top character drama, and absurd amounts of lens flares. In short, mediocrity ad absurdum.

| Roddenberry tried to use modern scientific knowledge and theoretical science more during the writing of TNG. He wanted to make it as close to reality as possible.

Yes, TNG was somewhat more proper on the science than the other series were, but the point remains that scientific accuracy is not a defining characteristic of Star Trek.
