| Quote (Joey_Penguin) Would you rather be an Airbender, Waterbender, Firebender, Earthbender, or nonbender? I'd rather be Bender so I can bend girders.

I guess I'd enjoy being an air bender. Fly around and make whirlwinds and stuff, hell yeah.

| I love Star Trek.
Really, it's Brent Spiner who's really funny, and you would never have guessed it if you had only seen him as Data.

| I'm reading a book on Proto-Indo-European. While making much sense in that the reconstructed forms can explain the differences in ancient and modern languages, I can't help wondering how any speakers of PIE actually could pronounce their language. For instance, the reconstructed form for "764th" becomes septṃkṃémtṃos seksktṃtémtṃos kwetwŕtos. Help... On the other hand speakers of Czech are apparently able to pronounce their numbers, so anything is possible I guess.

| And Anglophones can't read the name "Uranus" without hearing...
Not only Anglophones have problems. In so many countries regardless of native tongue, they put the stress on the wrong syllable. It's the first syllable. The "a" is short.

| Quote (midtskogen) And Anglophones can't read the name "Uranus" without hearing... Actually I can But that's probably because I'm so used to hearing it pronounced properly, and also the fact that it's a single word helps. If it was spelled Ur'anus or something then it would be a different story.
Quote (NovaSilisko) If you wanna be totally correct, Oo-rih-nus Nope
Quote (Wikipedia) The pronunciation of the name Uranus preferred among astronomers is /ˈjʊərənəs/ EWR-ə-nəs This is what every professional astronomer I've ever heard has used.

| Astronomers yeah, but IIRC Oorihnus is the original pronunciation. Can't remember where this was learned though so...

| Quote (NovaSilisko) but IIRC Oorihnus is the original pronunciation What's the original pronunciation? Classical Greek Οὐρανός? Or latinised V̄rănus?
Most languages will use the local pronunciation of vowels and consonants, but still use the Latin stress (Greek didn't have a stress accent anyway), and the rules for stress in Latin are simple: The stress accent falls on the penult (second-last syllable) if it's short, on the antepenult (third-last) otherwise. In the case of Uranus the syllable is short: ă. Which causes some confusion, since the the a is long in the very common suffix -ānus indicating origin or appurtenance, such as in "humane" (hūmānus), "volcano" (u̯olcānus) etc. In English the penult is Uranus should be short as well, and English tends reduce unaccented short vowels into a sloppy schwa: ə.

| In italian the "u" is like "oo" in english, so I have no problems saying Uranus because i say it like "Ooranus" and not "U'ranus"
Meanwhile for me it's almost impossible to distinguish "tree" from "three", or to say "thought" because I say it like "thugth"
