| Quote (werdnaforever) I'll use linux if I never have to use a terminal for anything I do with the operating system, or if all the programs I use right now were ported to linux. What can you not run on Linux?
Most Linux distributions would be totally unsuitable for Stallman. He's an extremist. And he wouldn't touch SE.
Most stuff that I use is available on Windows through Cygwin, but I have no clue how to fix or debug OS or configuration problems on Windows, and Windows makes the computer annoyingly, if not bare usably slow after a while, so I stick to Linux (I prefer Debian based distros). People tend to use what they're used to and know. And I've been using Linux for more than 20 years. At the time when enough software ran well enough on Linux to make it a fully usable operating system ready for the masses, which I would date to 1992, the other option was the brand new Windows 3.1. Which I wouldn't really call an operating system, but rather a moderately sophisticated DOS program. The first thing the Microsoft released that I would call an OS was Windows NT released shortly after, but I think Linux the GNU environment (though eventually mostly easily available for NT as well) was superior. I did use NT at work (with the GNU environment) in the mid 90's. It was stable and worked OK.
I'm not using Apple products at all. I feel too much like Stallman about those products. They limit and lock what the user can do too much. Stallman's description of people rushing to Apple stores screaming "handcuff me" is fitting.
Much of what I do on computers I do in Emacs. Not just for programming, but also for reading mail.

| Quote (DoctorOfSpace) Pretty much why I went Android for my phone. Yes, but Google is becoming increasingly evil. Android at least gives some options, though.
While Linux never has dominated desktop PC, I think it's often forgotten how extremely successful Linux has been on embedded systems. Today virtually any router, webcam or whatever runs Linux, and we wouldn't have that many manufacturers, that much competition or that cheap products if it wasn't for Linux. There must be billions of Linux kernels out there.

| Quote (werdnaforever) I'll use linux if I never have to use a terminal for anything Most linux distros don't require you to use the terminal at all anymore. You can do almost everything using the GUI. I still prefer to use the terminal rather than the GUI in some cases though, just because it's faster for me. You should check out Zorin OS, which is the distro i'm running right now. Really nice for people who are transitioning from Windows and want to minimize the culture shock.

| Quote (HarbingerDawn) The awards from the series of challenges that were popular a few months ago... Now I feel silly for having missed them. EDIT: or at least, for having not paid attention to them. I guess I prefer to just browse- I always find myself looking for planets as habitable (for humans) as possible.
