I've been on a forum about cosmology, where people is... i don't know... they keep talking about super-complex things that I hardly understand with my low-level english biggrin
Anyway, "stupid people" will always be more of "intelligent people", for this reason the war still exists and our civility keep going backwards...

What's your favourite numbers?

Here's one I like: 142,857 Why?

1/7 = 0.142857142857...

142857 × 1 = 142857
142857 × 2 = 285714
142857 × 3 = 428571
142857 × 4 = 571428
142857 × 5 = 714285
142857 × 6 = 857142

142857² = 20,408,122,449 and 20,408 + 122,449 = 142,857

142.857×7 = 999,999 and 142+859 = 999 and 14+28+57=99

1+4+2+8+5+7=27 and 2+7=9.

And much more but mostly consequences of the above.

Mine is a Golden ratio:

φ = (sqrt(5) + 1) / 2 = 1.6180339887...

1 / φ = φ - 1 = 1.6180339887... = (sqrt(5) - 1) / 2

The square root of two wasn't the favourite amomg the Pythagoreans. Legend has it that Hippasos discovered that it was irrational and for that his fellow Pythagoreans drowned him since irrational numbers didn't fit their beliefs. The murder part is probably not true, but it's a good story.

I'm really interested in math, and one of the numbers I like the most is -1/12. Because of this divergent series first prooved by Euler himself : 1+2+3+4+5+6+7+...=-1/12. This is a result I found more than interresting, because we can see that, according to the rules of computation, an infinite sum of positive integers can make a non-integer negative number.
Also, it can be prooved that 1+13+13²+133+...=1+8192+313+413+...=-1/12 too.

There's a lot of other numbers I really appreciate :

Integers : -1, 0, 1, 2, 12, 24, 132, 252, 691... Among a lot of other exponent, primes and remarkable values.
Non integet rational : 1/144...
Irrational : 122 (a magical number for musicians), the golden ratio, the silver ratio
Trancendental : log(2), γ (Euler's constant), e, 2.i.π.ℤ (as log(1))...

I'll use linux if I never have to use a terminal for anything I do with the operating system, or if all the programs I use right now were ported to linux.

So, it will be a long time before I use GNU/Linux as my primary OS.
