This is a live link from the event: http://www.youtube.com/redbull

Lt. Joe Kittinger is on the mission control ground team. He holds the previous record.
Felix Baumgartner is the man in the capsule. He will attempt to break the sound barrier as he freefalls from the max. mission altitude of 120000 feet!

Another link is: http://www.redbullstratos.com/live/

There is some interesting facts and figures in the site as well.

Success! Apparently he didn't break the freefall time record. It remains to be seen if he managed to break the sound barrier as he freefalled.

I hope he did at least break the sound barrier, but it looked like he was spinning a bit at the start and that seems to have slowed him down a bit.

It was great to watch; he ended up jumping from 39 km height. It looked really amazing up there.

^Assuming constant 1g gravity (it's close enough) and that you'd magically cancel out all your momentum as you stepped out of the ISS, you'd be down in the troposphere in a little under five minutes, going ten times the speed of sound by then, if my calculations are correct. surprised I think that's slow enough that you would survive the friction on reentry, actually. Of course, in reality you could never just cancel out your orbital momentum without wasting an awful lot of fuel.

No! At that speed you would burn up. Even on much lower suborbital spaceflights a heatshield was needed to survive. Even at three times the speed of sound you would need special protection from the heat. Any freefall jump from any altitude of space would require some kind of thermal protection system.

As for getting to that altitude for the jump, the best way would be a sub-orbital rocket flight.

Are there a video record available? I missed the jump due to problems on youtube.
