Apparently they thought that they originated from the rover, but it appears they do not.
I don't think that anyone assumed the specks were from the rover. The checked it out as a possibility of course, but I don't recall that being the judgement of the team.
One of the Space.com articles did say that they were initially concerned that it might be pieces of the rover or the SkyCrane (litterbug....), but when they checked at a fresh site and found the same stuff, they concluded that it was native martian material.
Just what it is though, I have no idea, it could be anything, there are plenty of minerals here on earth that look shiny and sparkly, or maybe it's just a reflective surface created by the cutting plane of the scoop. We'll probably know in a few days.
I initially thought it was metal like silver or something (there was another news report that the rover had found an ancient streambed or the area is one, maybe that's why I thought that), but I revised my thought when I didn't really see anything bright or sparkly in the pictures (and read the articles) since it sounded vague enough to be pretty much any mineral that is bright or sparkly.
Plus I did say earlier that they checked and it isn't from the rover or skycrane.

Indeed it was just speculation on what they most likely could be.

On the Russian forum this imaged touched off a discussion about how it was taken, being in awe of the beautiful images of an alien world, lamenting that we can't go to Mars, wondering how soon people will be able to go, and how we're going to accomplish that.

| Wow, that's a gorgeous image. It's incredible it was taken from the surface of a different planet. Curiosity really seems to be carrying a very good camera.

A lot of very good cameras actually! There are 17 cameras on the rover in total  But yes, MAHLI (which took the above mosaic) is one of the most amazing. It can function as a close-up microscopic camera, or as a normal camera, and is located on the arm enabling shots like this.
