| astroniki, this makes me speechless. 
Unrelated, did anyone else get to see the aurora last night? We had quite the geomagnetic storm, and from here in Washington the lights were very bright, shifted rapidly, and sometimes spread past zenith. Probably the best show in this area in many years.

| Over here the northern sky looks like this at midnight these days...
Perhaps, using photography and clever image processing, it could be possible to extract some aurora from the southern sky if present there even with the sun 6 degrees below the horizon, but I doubt it.

You can't see images like that in real time. This is the result of many long exposure photographs composited together. Whatever might be visible in real time would be nothing more than a faint gray smudge with some stars.

The bottom image shows aurora, the top image shows some airglow.
It's the faint, slightly banded textured greenish glow located just above the horizon (it's typically most apparent between 10 and 30 degrees above the horizon). Here's a good image of it from the VLT, showing both green and red airglow. From space, it looks like a bubble surrounding the Earth.
Its light is really quite dim, requiring much darker skies than those necessary for seeing the Milky Way. So you had nice skies where you were.
