| Caught a nice little fireball on camera last night (23:14:11 local time, 21:14:11 UTC and camera time). I'm trying out a new 5 megapixel camera and this is its first catch.

I'm not sure about its brightness because the night is so bright. Perhaps -10.

| Go when there's no moon when the galactic centre is up. It doesn't matter much whether July or August, but I think the galactic centre sets later in July than August.
If you have a camera lens with a low f-number, you can get brilliant exposures of the galactic centre even with just a few seconds exposure, so there will be no star trails.

| Thanks. This was an unusual case. Normally noctilucent clouds appear only when the sun is below 6 degrees below the horizon, so here they usually don't appear until later in July. Last night, however, the clouds were visible from 23:30 till 03:15 - appearing when the sun dipped below 2.5 degrees and disappeared when the sun made it back to 2.5 (never being lower than 6 degrees). That makes the clouds extremely bright.
That possibly explains why they also were visible even in the southern sky. I've never seen that before.
Also note the Earth shadow at the end of the video.
Added: Here's another video, not by me, but by Arne Danielsen (I still think it relevant in this context):
It better shows how much of the sky the clouds covered. This was a pretty rare event.

| I can't wait until the nights get dark again for us northerners.. I will test my girlfriend's new camera (Canon EOS 450 D), hopefully I will be able to take some neat pictures. Unfortunately, the completely dark skies arrive in mid-August at latitude 60 N  I now live a much smaller town so I'm very close to fairly dark skies.

| I know what you mean! It feels like such a long wait just to get some dark skies. The other night I went out at 3am (as the moon set at that time) and at about 3:30ish it started getting bright again
