I saw half of it before the clouds rolled in. Clouds ruined the best part.

Some old pictures (December 2007):

One of the best halo displays I've ever seen. It stayed like this for hours.

Pretty poor compared to some of your efforts, guys, but here's the best image of Saturn I've ever photographed.

Done through the eyepiece (Orion XT8 -> 3X Barlow->Sony Xperia T smartphone->Photoshop), in Ireland, 24-04-14 02:57gmt

The wind jostled the scope as I took the picture, causing the double image, but it seemed to help, compared to other photos on the same night, by splitting the brightness and reducing the glare that was obscuring the details.

I recombined it in photoshop, tried to reverse the motion blur, and adjusted the colour channels to reduce the chromatic aberration. The right-hand image was an attempt to bring out further detail by sharpening further, but I don't think it worked out.

Nevertheless, there is a hint of the Cassini Division around the edge of the rings - that makes me very happy, as I couldn't actually make it out with my eye on the night.

Can anyone recommend some starter equipment for getting started in astrophotography? I have been looking at this thread forever, and now I want to be able to post here. Also, my (cheap and crappy) telescope broke recently, so some telescope recommendations would be nice.

It depends on what you want to do. If you want to take the kind of pictures that Antza and I take (wide-field images), then you need a DSLR and a tripod. If you want to take telescopic images, then you need a telescope and photographic equipment to go with it. I could give input on DSLRs, but not on other things.

Down here in Cornwall we don't get many clear nights, but when we do they can be beautiful!

This is the 'Cheesewring' up on Bodmin Moor.

And this one is a Moon Halo.

I tried recreating 'Starry Night' by Van Gogh.

Still, I thought I would share.

Not in this thread, this is for your own work. Move it to the aurora thread.

Caught a nice little fireball on camera last night (23:14:11 local time, 21:14:11 UTC and camera time). I'm trying out a new 5 megapixel camera and this is its first catch.

2560x1920
800x600
1280x720 (old camera)

I'm not sure about its brightness because the night is so bright. Perhaps -10.
