| You must remember that they will be funded mainly by investors and a TV reality show. Maybe they'll even create an item in kickstarter. But not every nation would abandon humans on Mars. If the need ever arises, I'm sure someone will bring them home, along with all that precious information about the red planet.

So, in other Mars news, Curiosity has apparently found something interesting, but NASA aren't saying what it is yet. It must be aliens.

It was never really explained in the Dune novels just what ;wormsign' is.
For the Mars curiosity rover, given that they said it's one for the history books, I'd say it's 100% definite proof of life. Who knows.

| Well, people have been speculating that it has found organic compounds. But would that really be so exciting? Organic compounds aren't hard to make, and we already know Titan is swimming in the stuff (in fact, a lot of moons/planets I think, but Titan is the only one I'm sure about). If they find organic compounds on Mars, it'll pretty much be "we've found yet another thing which doesn't disprove that life may have existed there once". I don't see how it would change anything.
Now, if they found something that definitively proved Mars could never have supported life, that would be disappointing, but far more interesting.

| I think people are going overboard with the whole idea that they might've discovered life; for all we know, this is going to be a repetition of "NASA has discovered alien life!" > "NASA has discovered arsenic-based life on Earth!" > "bacteria that are able to use arsenic when they have to have been found" > "That paper was quite possibly mistaken". But even if it really is something Earth-shaking, it doesn't need to have anything to do with life. They could've discovered Mars is enormously rich in rare metals, for example, or that it's still volcanically active. They could've found traces of a meteorite from a different Solar System, or just a different planet for that matter. There could be amazing clues to Mars' origin found. All these things would be very interesting and cool, but have little to do with life.

| To find bacteria and simple organic compounds is very important, because we have to see how the life grows in planets different by earth, unfortunately we can't go to other systems right now (because we can't go on the solar system's planets too), but even if someday we will travel many light years just to find bacteria life it would be enought, because we could greatly increase our knowledges about life...
