At some point in the past (I believe it was near 300 BC? but I really can't recall accurately but it doesn't bear too much on this anyway) the recorded calendar year went from being 360 days to 365 days all over the world. I have heard a theory about this involving interactive orbits of Mars and Earth until this time when a final near pass/energy transfer between the two planets left us with the current stable orbits.

I'm pretty sure I'm not using the right terms, apologies, but I hope I carried the thought regardless.

Since SE is so awesome, I thought I'd check and see, just in case. Doing a bit of digital time traveling, I observed no discernible changes in the orbits back to several thousand years BC.

Is the above theory even possible or is it a load of dung? If it's possible, is there any likelihood of modeling it in SE?

Just crazy ponderings. Keep up the great work!

No such interactions between Mars and Earth ever happened, and both objects have had their present orbits for a very long time. Calendars are human constructs and are always subject to change (even within the last century major countries have changed their calendars), but I seriously doubt that all people all over the world thousands of years ago all used one calendar, then all simultaneously switched to another.

I know this might not fit the FAQ Forum, but...
What's the name of the music at the pause/main menu screen?

I would like to know what is calculated by what hardware for the purpose of optimizing my computer for SE. I know clouds of stars are generated on all threads when flying through them and I read that terrain is generated on the GPU, though I am not sure of that.

Could anyone confirm and add to that list? Thanks!

I would like to use Space Engine for Astronomy Presentations. i.e. like a 3D version of Powerpoint or Keynote. So that I can show peopele what is in the night sky over the month, what planets are visible, etc. but also have text overlaid over the top of the images.

I am aware this may not be possible right now, but in teh future will ther ebe an SDK that would allow me to modify Space Engine for such purposes?

Yes, in the future. For now you could try to use some transparent window with text over the SE window. I don't know which app could do that, but maybe there exist some.

Yes, in the distant future such things will be possible. But SE is not primarily an Earth-based observational astronomy program, so if you need something for that specific purpose you will probably be better off using something like Stellarium. SE is useful if you actually want to move your camera freely through the universe.

EDIT: Ninja'd! biggrin

Maybe this is kind of a stupid question but I want to ask what 0.9.7.2. means.
I mean, what kind of superchanges will have the 0.9.9.1 for example. Is the first digit related to changes of the whole coding and engine? Are the third and fourth digits less important? They signify a less changes? If we are at 0.9.7.1 Do we need 29 releases to get to the version 1? or is more like I have seen, when we past from 0.9.6.0 to 0.9.7.0 jumping all the intermediate stages?

What!!!!!!¿?¿ smile

The major version updates now changing the third digit instead of the second is just to prevent the version numbers from getting to 1 (or 0.10) before SE is actually finished, I think. I don't think it means that much.

I occasionally stream at http://www.twitch.tv/magistermystax. Sometimes SE, sometimes other games.

Basically, just ignore version numbers, there isn't a set system to them other than letting you know which one is newest. 0.9.8, 0.9.9, and 1.0 are reserved for specific points in development, every other update will increment by 0.0.0.1, regardless of how significant the update is. A more sensible version numbering system will be implemented after the program reaches 1.0.

Why called "Sol" not "Sun" in SpaceEngine

Astronomy frequently use the Latin names.

(Etymologically "sol" and "sun" belongs to the same IE l/n stem. Some germanic languages settled on the n stem of the oblique cases.)

That far back the world had no standarised calendar, but different cultures had their own calendars. 360 is not a surprising number, though, since 360 allows a great number of divisions. The Babylonians did not pick their sexagesimal system by chance either.
