| Quote (Talisman) good idea for a thread Vinny Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I'm actually the one who put the thread together Some of the questions were originally posted to separate threads, so I assembled them into this one and renamed it to be for all galaxy questions

| I really love the new galaxy models and they look good but I was wondering if it's possible to procedurally create a completely unique looking one based on a seed for everyone of them? You could still mix in the current galaxy models and of course the milky way sprite.
Even some ellipticals can look unique and have dust sprites.
This might be taxing on game performance but if cache's are cleared when you leave a galaxy it could work, the system of generation could be very simple and still yield realistic looking galaxies.
Also fragment galaxies, like the LMC, SMC, I've never seen such companions for other galaxies other then the milky way. Is there any way some of these could be generated for other galaxies?

| Without having a number of set intermediate/remnant looking galaxy types, I don't see this being implemented anytime soon.

Perhaps it will be in 0.97, though if he decides to concentrate on more important features first I wouldn't mind

| Hi, guys!
I'm not 100% sure, are there any stars like example between the Andromeda galaxy and the Whirlpool galaxy which is about 7.700 Mpc or 7,700,000 parsecs or about 24,000,000 light years from the Andromeda galaxy? Right now, I'm flying from the Andromeda galaxy to the Whirlpool galaxy, I'm now 5.369 Mpc or 5,369,000 parsecs or about 16,000,000 light years away from the whirlpool galaxy, and I see whole bunch of stars. Here is what happened, about 2 days ago, as I fly away from the Andromeda galaxy at the speed of 10.00 pc or 10 parsecs per second, the stars are rushing by my spacecraft until there is less and less stars, and about several hours later, I see whole bunch of stars as I'm flying from the Andromeda galaxy to the Whirlpool galaxy, and is that normal or not? Thanks!
Cheers, Vincent

| Yeah, there's probably just a dwarf galaxy between them. If you can select any of those stars and post its name I could be sure.

| Hi, apenpaap!
Okay, I checked out what those stars are, these are the dwarf galaxies like RG 0-9-88679570-450, NGC 5103/UGC 8388/MCG 7-27-62/ZWG 217.31, RG 0-1-5-911, NGC 3998/UGC 6946/MCG 9-20-46/ZWG 269.25 and ect. I think those are dwarf galaxies, what do think? Thanks!
Cheers, Vincent

| Well, RG 0-9-88679570-450 is certainly a dwarf galaxy, and it's between Andromeda and Whirlpool, so probably what you flew through. The other three are beautiful big spiral galaxies, and not even remotely on the way between Andromeda and Whirlpool, though, so you may have made a little mistake there. However, that first one is indeed a (procedural) dwarf galaxy.

| Hi, apenpaap!
That is what I thought! Oops! What mistake I made about those last 3 galaxies? Thanks!

| Well, I don't know what exactly your mistake was, but those galaxies are definitely not ones you could come through when travelling from Andromeda to Whirlpool, as they're in different directions, and one of them is even Gigaparsecs away. They're also definitely not galaxies that look like random clumps of stars, but big ones with a spiral structure. So I really doubt you could've flown through them.

| Hi, apenpaap!
I've learned that from HarbingerDawn, the farthest away galaxy is 8.66 Gpc or 8,660,000,000 parsecs or about 25,000,000,000 light years away from earth!
Cheers, Vincent

| Hi all,
Ever since I first started using Space Engine in version 0.9.4, the prospect of a procedurally generated universe in a future update had me extremely excited. Now that it has finally been established in the most recent update, I have had a lot of time to explore what I would consider quite a lot of galaxies and all that is within them. Something that I have yet to see among the procedurally generated portions of the universe, though, are satellite galaxies, such as the Magellanic Clouds or the Sagittarius dwarf elliptical galaxy that are considered satellite galaxies of the Milky Way. Have I been looking at the wrong kind of galaxies (Although I am positive that I have looked at all the major types), or is it possible that I have just been having extremely bad luck when it comes to picking galaxies that have satellite galaxies? Or, on the other hand, does Space Engine lack procedurally generated satellite galaxies altogether? I've been itching to know this ever since 0.9.6 came out.
Thanks!

| Hello BloodySoap, and welcome to the forum. Please take a moment to read the forum rules.
I have moved your question here to this thread. To answer your question, I don't think that satellite galaxies have been implemented yet. Procedural galaxy generation is still a newly implemented feature and you can almost certainly expect improvements in the future.

| Yes BloodySoap, satellite galaxies are not implemented yet. Even the real galaxies catalog have few satellites, only the Milky Way and neighboring galaxies do, because it is too hard to discover dwarf galaxies from such huge distances.

| Ah, thank you. Yes, I am aware of the fact that very few cataloged galaxies are in fact satellite galaxies, but couldn't you just have them procedurally generate in the same way that planets do? For example, the planetary system around Alpha Centauri is a procedurally generated one, even though the star itself is a real, cataloged star. Wouldn't that same principle work with galaxies, too? Cataloged galaxies and procedurally generated galaxies that are large enough (Such as the Sombrero galaxy, or the Cartwheel galaxy) to be able to have satellite galaxies should have some procedurally generated around them. I think that would be quite a neat feature in one of the future updates! Perhaps even the next update, if possible? It's something to think about, even though satellite galaxies are so minuscule. It will definitely add to the atmosphere of Space Engine!
Oh, and before I forget, in a future update, will the volume of the universe in Space Engine be increased from it's current size of about 1000 cubic Gpc to something even greater, perhaps nearing infinity? Of course, only if that is feasible. Thanks!
And thank you for moving my question to this thread. I saw it a while ago, but I thought it was just a thread that Vinny had created, not a general galaxy questions thread. Sorry about that.
