Procedural Cities, Structures & Ruins

Now I think Space Engineer has mentioned perhaps adding procedural structures/ruins, and buildings, lights on the night side of planets with life. But making movement and cars and animals and such would be extremely hard. However completely static things should work out a lot better.

Think about being able to explore giant completely diverse ghost cities, maybe even explore the inside of buildings and structures, every planet having a unique style of building, maybe even separate unique styles of that style for each planet. Giant buildings, cities, towns, very small towns, maybe even roads.

What do you guys think? cool

Also, I think that lights on the dark side of the planets should be added only when there will be actual cities to make those lights and not before. Imagine seeing beautiful lights on the surface but when you land on the planet there is nothing.

You know I'm a sucker for dead civilizations wink
But I think that it would not make much sense for SpaceEngineer to put a lot of work into making procedural cities and such. If things like that are in the engine, they should be extremely rare, so rare that hardly anyone would ever see them. So that should not occupy a very large portion of development resources.

Procedural city lights should be added if/when cities are implemented, yes. But I think that night light maps should be implemented as soon as possible, both for use on catalog planets as well as for use on procedural worlds (for aurorae, lava, heat-glow for hot worlds, maybe even bioluminescence).

I found this awhile back after looking at the related videos of some space engine videos. I think a simplified version of this would make for some really interesting cities, especially when put on top of the already awesome terrain.

I think the first thing that should be added is more detail to the worlds such as trees and rocks. I also found a cool video demonstrating procedural weather effects, though it might be too early to think about adding that.

That would look amazing. smile Bioluminescence would make oceania worlds much more interesting to look at.

Yes! This would be amazing, procedurally generated aurorae, lava streams. heat glow.. bioluminescense...

Nooooooooooooooooooo!

Depending on a planets suitability for life and it's age at least ruins should be percent on 20% of terras with life. Space Engineer said gameplay will revolve around finding terras with life and such so I think procedural buildings should be a big part, not too big, heck, I would be pleased if "cities" were just a bunch of procedural blocks, as long as they're varied. cool

I don't think that either, but as I said in the last post space engineer has mentioned that gameplay will probably revolve around terra's with intelligent life (Where will you get those ships?)

So I don't think it would be very fun gameplay wise searching for millions of years scanning billions of planets to find a terra with life that has advanced life.

I'd love to see an Intelligent life flag and even in beta a few rectangles and squares with some night lights. Its not realistic looking but it would still give a more unique feel to finding something very rare like intelligence.

Personally, I'd rather visit a planet so see some incredibly futuristic city.

And besides, there are many methods to generate procedural cities.

They would most likely have structures of some sort, of course it might not even be similar to buildings and houses but they would need structures for technology, even if they didn't sleep or "rest" or hang out in places. cool

I would be fine with this as well, from the detail of mountains on planets in space engine I think that decent looking procedural cities could be possible though.

Plus the laws of physics are the same everywhere. They would still need electric grids or some form of energy transfer to power their societies. You could expect some sort of similar structure to our systems.
