Well i wouldnt say impossible... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLfHDul5XGw

This is local cloud, generated and animated on a small scene. In SpaceEngine I must generate clouds for entire planet. 3D models of course will be generated in relatively small regions around camera, but their pattern must match global cloud layer pattern, generated as a flat layer (this is now done). This layer is not dynamic, 3D clouds shall not be dynamic either.

When are you going to add more planet types and more procedural generators for surfaces and atmospheres?

I will add it soon:)

Generation of atmosphere takes several seconds - that's too long, and it won't work on all graphics cards. So I simply include 7 precomputed models in archive.

Why don't you process them in the background on another thread? (I see you're adding in better distribution of load to this next release)

Why can't you do them in the player bubble only when he's in a local area on a planet?
Obviously at high altitude n in space u need static clouds, but if u used a player bubble,
wouldn't that then allow procedural vegetation, and dynamic clouds?

This will not help.

Then the "local" clouds will not match "global" cloud layer. This is like mountains: You see them from space, as you approach them, they disappear and are replaced with craters, for example.

I'm starting a blog where I will describe some aspects of my current work.
